Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead a team of senior engineers responsible for Docker Build Cloud and Docker Hub’s build systems, which process millions of container builds annually for hundreds of organizations.
- • Own the delivery of a high-stakes, ambiguous roadmap that includes time-bound commitments to regulated and federal customers, translating strategy into predictable, executable plans.
- • Partner closely with Product to co-create a roadmap the team believes in, ensuring alignment between technical execution and business objectives.
- • Stay deeply involved in technical design discussions, code reviews, and hands-on development where it accelerates progress—active in PRs and system architecture, not detached from the codebase.
- • Collaborate with engineers who lead different parts of the system to jointly set technical direction, fostering a culture of shared ownership rather than top-down decision-making.
- • Maintain operational excellence for production systems, including managing a humane, sustainable on-call rotation that covers evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- • Be accountable for the reliability, security hygiene, and performance of high-scale, production-grade infrastructure supporting secure, sandboxed CI workflows.
- • Drive the growth, development, and performance of each engineer on the team, including conducting difficult performance conversations with fairness and directness.
- • Hire senior engineers to strengthen the team’s technical depth and capacity, focusing on candidates who thrive in autonomous, remote-first environments.
- • Work cross-functionally with Product, Sales, Commercial, Legal, Hub/Registry, and Security teams to align priorities and shield the team from organizational churn.
- • Raise the team’s bar for engineering excellence, particularly around security: understanding modern attack vectors, OWASP Top 10, and build pipeline exposure points.
- • Build and operate Docker’s next-generation secure build infrastructure, including a hardened build runner that executes each workflow step inside a micro-VM sandbox.
- • Ensure build outputs have strong, verifiable provenance, including support for SLSA, in-toto, cosign, SBOMs, and vulnerability scanning in regulated and air-gapped environments.
- • Maintain deep familiarity with CI/CD internals, container image formats, OCI registry mechanics, and software supply chain security practices.
- • Foster a culture of autonomy, judgment, and unblocking over rigid process, enabling senior engineers to own technical decisions while providing clear direction.
- • Be energized by ambiguity and operational complexity, with a proven ability to lead through uncertainty in high-traffic, mission-critical systems.
- • Communicate clearly and frequently with customers and stakeholders, maintaining a habit of staying close to user needs and real-world usage patterns.
- • Contribute to a remote-first, globally distributed team spanning European and US time zones with a high degree of independence and self-direction.
- • Maintain hands-on familiarity with Go, the team’s primary programming language, and be willing to write code to unblock progress or improve system quality.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years managing high-performing engineering teams, including engineers at or above their own level of technical seniority
- • 8+ years of professional, hands-on, full-time software engineering experience in backend, infrastructure, or platform engineering
- • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- • Comfortable inheriting and leading a team they didn’t build, earning trust from experienced engineers and managing performance conversations directly
- • Technically deep and still hands-on: recent engineering experience to actively participate in design and code review, not detached from technical detail
- • Strong interest in security: understanding of OWASP Top 10, build threat models, and software supply chain security concepts (SLSA, in-toto, cosign, SBOMs)
🏖️ Benefits
- • Freedom & flexibility to fit work around life
- • Designated quarterly Whaleness Days plus end-of-year Whaleness break
- • Home office setup allowance
- • 16 weeks of paid parental leave (after 6 months of employment)
- • Technology stipend equivalent to $100 USD net/month
- • Equity in the company
