  • • Lead habitat enhancement projects on public lands across North Carolina to improve grasslands, forests, coasts, and wetlands for declining bird species and wildlife.
  • • Represent Audubon North Carolina in scoping meetings, public comment processes, and technical reviews with federal, state, and local public land agencies including USDA National Forests, NC Wildlife Resources Commission, National Parks, and State Parks.
  • • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key conservation partners such as the Appalachian Mountains and Southeastern Atlantic Coast Joint Ventures, land trusts, and Audubon chapters.
  • • Identify, prioritize, and execute conservation projects that enhance critical bird habitats and increase climate resilience in priority landscapes throughout the state.
  • • Conduct or coordinate bird and habitat monitoring at project sites and communicate findings to both scientific and non-scientific audiences through reports, presentations, and outreach.
  • • Advise public land managers on restoration design, native plant selection, and habitat management practices to maximize bird benefits.
  • • Collaborate with Audubon’s Advocacy team to engage chapters and communities in conservation, restoration, and advocacy efforts for priority public lands.
  • • Serve as a public representative of Audubon North Carolina through presentations, public speaking, agency meetings, and stakeholder engagements.
  • • Write and edit scientific reports, grant proposals, technical documents, and public-facing materials to support funding and policy initiatives.
  • • Apply ArcGIS and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to analyze data, map habitats, and prepare reports and presentations.
  • • Navigate complex regulatory and political environments to build consensus among diverse stakeholders with competing interests.
  • • Travel throughout North Carolina for field assessments, partner meetings, and project implementation; occasional out-of-state travel required.
  • • Perform strenuous outdoor work including carrying field equipment across varied terrain and in extreme weather conditions, including cold, wet winters and hot summers.
  • • Maintain a strong commitment to safety, inclusivity, and Audubon’s core values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.
  • • Support philanthropic efforts by contributing to public funding initiatives and engaging donors and partners in conservation outcomes.
  • • Work collaboratively with colleagues across Audubon’s Americas network to align on shared conservation priorities and joint projects.
  • • Work independently and as part of a team, adapting flexibly to evolving project needs and deadlines.
  • • Ensure all activities comply with Audubon’s ā€œWhere We Workā€ Policy; this role is remote within North Carolina with hybrid expectations for office days (Mondays, Tuesdays, and two additional days monthly).
