• We are seeking a highly motivated ML Research Scientist to join our Health & Sensing team in San Francisco. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to transform complex sensor data into personalized, intelligent health and fitness experiences. Today, our platform provides key metrics such as heart rate, heart rate variability, and detailed sleep analysis. Tomorrow, your imagination and technical prowess will unlock novel, meaningful metrics that drive significant behavioral change, leading to improved sleep and overall health outcomes for our users.
• You will work in close collaboration with a cross-functional R&D and production team, playing a pivotal role in prototyping and shipping innovative solutions that directly impact our product and user experience. Your work will be instrumental in advancing our understanding of sleep physiology and its connection to overall well-being, contributing to the development of next-generation sleep fitness technologies.
• Example projects you might contribute to include:
• Autopilot Thermoregulation: Enhance the Pod's adaptive thermoregulation system, the "autopilot" that continuously learns and adapts to micro-events such as restlessness or awakenings. You will design and implement advanced policies, potentially utilizing reinforcement learning and closed-loop control strategies, to optimize user comfort and sleep quality in real-time based on physiological feedback.
• Health Foundation Modeling: Develop a sophisticated multimodal health foundation model. This model will integrate diverse data streams, including physiological signals from the Pod, data from external wearable sensors, and contextual environmental information. Leveraging over one billion hours of sleep data collected by Eight Sleep, you will build a robust model capable of uncovering deep insights into health and sleep patterns.
• Behavioral Simulations: Construct a high-fidelity physiological simulator designed to model the intricate relationship between daily behaviors, subsequent sleep quality, and next-day readiness. This initiative aims to create a non-invasive, always-on model for healthy aging, powered by the continuous stream of biosignals and physiological data captured by the Pod.
• This role demands a systematic approach to problem-solving and a commitment to making data-driven decisions to ensure the delivery of best-in-class products. You will be at the forefront of applying AI and ML to one of the most critical aspects of human health: sleep. Your contributions will directly influence the health and performance of our users, making this a uniquely impactful opportunity.

🎯 Requirements

• PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field with a strong publication record in top-tier venues, or a BS/MS with equivalent experience and publications at leading conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, CVPR, ICCV, ACL, EMNLP, INTERSPEECH).
• Expertise in at least one core area of machine learning and artificial intelligence, such as self-supervised learning, multi-modal ML, model optimization, natural language processing (NLP), or large language models (LLMs).
• Demonstrated experience using programming languages like Python, C/C++, or similar, for data manipulation, deriving insights from large datasets, and training sophisticated machine learning models.
• A strong, demonstrable interest in applying machine learning techniques to solve complex health-related problems and analyze health-related data.
• A minimum of 3 years of practical experience applying ML to solve real-world problems, or equivalent experience in quantitative research and analytics.
