- • The Outpatient Medical Coder 3 role is critical to ensuring accurate reimbursement and data collection for the Ohio State University Health System by assigning proper diagnosis and procedure codes to outpatient medical records.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing electronic medical records in IHIS, selecting appropriate admitting, principal, and secondary diagnoses and procedures, assigning accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4 codes, sequencing codes correctly, and abstracting key patient encounter data such as admission source, disposition, and attending physicians.
- • The role operates within the Health System Shared Services department, specifically under MIM CDI and Coding, supporting the financial and operational integrity of OSU’s outpatient services across emergency, ambulatory surgery, observation, and clinic settings.
- • The incumbent will maintain productivity and quality standards, submit weekly volume logs, attend monthly coding education sessions, and pursue continuing education to maintain certification and stay current with official coding guidelines from AHIMA or AAPC.
🎯 Requirements
- • Completion of a CAHIIM-approved coding certificate or HIMT program, or equivalent education and experience.
- • Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management and minimum 1 year of outpatient coding experience with ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 for emergency, outpatient, ambulatory surgery, observation, and clinic services.
- • Credentialed as RHIT, RHIA, CCS (AHIMA), or COC (AAPC) — outpatient certification required.
- • Demonstrated coding proficiency via successful completion of OSUWMC’s internal coding test.
- • Familiarity or experience with computer-assisted coding (CAC) and/or automated encoder systems.
