Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Planet Technologies—the Nation’s leading Microsoft services partner to the public sector—and become the Power BI Developer who turns raw, mission-critical data into clear, actionable intelligence for federal agencies. In this remote, Eastern-US role you will sit at the intersection of data engineering, analytics, and national impact, translating complex information into dashboards that drive decisions at the highest levels of government.
- • Own the end-to-end data lifecycle for high-profile federal engagements. You will identify and connect to dozens of disparate on-premises and cloud data sources—from classified SQL Server estates to open-source APIs—selecting optimal storage modes (Import, DirectQuery, or Composite) and ensuring secure, compliant ingestion pathways that satisfy FedRAMP, FISMA, and agency-specific mandates.
- • Profile every byte that lands in the pipeline. Examine data structures, sniff out anomalies, and analyze column-level properties to surface hidden data-quality issues before they reach analysts. You will document lineage and maintain metadata that auditors and security teams rely on.
- • Clean, transform, and load with surgical precision. Build robust Power Query / Dataflow ETL routines that standardize formats, resolve referential gaps, and create performant surrogate keys for star-schema models. Your scripts will run nightly across multi-terabyte warehouses and Azure Synapse pools with minimal latency.
- • Model data that scales. Design intuitive, governed datasets using best-practice dimensional modeling, define relationship cardinality and cross-filter direction, and craft advanced DAX measures that answer complex policy questions in milliseconds. Optimize aggregations, implement incremental refresh, and tune DirectQuery for sub-second response times—even when row counts exceed 100 million.
- • Visualize insights that matter. Create pixel-perfect executive dashboards, operational scorecards, and paginated reports that adhere to Section 508 accessibility standards. Leverage custom visuals, bookmarks, and drill-through paths to guide users from high-level KPIs to underlying transactional detail without ever leaving the report canvas.
- • Analyze beyond the surface. Embed AI insights, anomaly detection, and natural-language Q&A to empower non-technical stakeholders. Partner with data scientists to surface predictive models inside Power BI, ensuring that forecasts of budget spend, threat vectors, or citizen-service levels are consumable in two clicks.
- • Deploy and govern with confidence. Automate dataset refreshes via XMLA endpoints and Azure DevOps pipelines, implement row-level security that respects clearance levels, and maintain versioned release notes that satisfy change-management boards. Monitor usage telemetry to proactively tune performance and retire stale assets.
- • Collaborate across mission teams. Translate vague stakeholder requests into crisp user stories, facilitate backlog grooming with Scrum Masters, and present sprint demos to federal executives who depend on your dashboards for daily briefings. Your communication skills will turn technical nuance into plain-English narrative.
- • Champion continuous improvement. Evaluate emerging Power BI features—such as deployment pipelines, hybrid tables, and XMLA writeback—then run controlled pilots that prove ROI before enterprise rollout. Share lessons learned in internal Communities of Practice and mentor junior analysts on DAX patterns and data-storytelling techniques.
- • Uphold security and compliance at every step. Work within classified networks when required, apply encryption in transit and at rest, and ensure that all artifacts pass vulnerability scans and privacy impact assessments. Your attention to detail protects both data integrity and national security.
🎯 Requirements
- • 3+ years of hands-on experience in data visualization and reporting, including at least 1 year developing production-grade solutions in Microsoft Power BI
- • Current Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- • Demonstrated proficiency with Power Query ETL, Dataflows, and the Common Data Model; comfort authoring complex DAX measures and optimizing tabular models for large datasets
- • Strong SQL or PL-SQL skills—able to write efficient stored procedures, tune indexes, and debug query plans across SQL Server, Azure SQL, or Oracle environments
- • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a federal security clearance (background investigation up to 10 years); prior experience in sensitive or classified government environments strongly preferred
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive base salary ranging from $100,000 to $180,000, with final offer tailored to experience, clearance level, and specialized certifications
- • 100% remote work arrangement within the Eastern U.S. time zone—no commute, flexible hours, and stipend for home-office setup
- • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, and paid federal holidays; detailed in the Planet Technologies Benefit Guide 2025-2026
- • Professional growth fund—annual allowance for additional certifications, conferences, and advanced Power BI or Azure training to keep your skills on the cutting edge
