• As a Principal Full Stack Engineer, you will be an integral part of a lean, high-performing team comprising engineers and product leaders. Your contributions will directly influence how we scale our platform and amplify our impact. From day one, you will collaborate closely with the founding team, based in London and Paris, to define our product vision and architect our technical landscape. This role is crucial as we expand our product offerings and deepen our market presence across emerging economies, focusing on building technology that directly addresses and solves customer challenges.
• To excel in this role, you will need a blend of empathy, curiosity, and creativity. You must be adept at uncovering the root causes of complex issues and designing solutions that strike an optimal balance between impact, development effort, and user delight. Your responsibilities will span the entire product lifecycle, from initial ideation and user interface development to backend logic implementation, deployment, and post-launch feedback analysis and performance measurement.
• You will be instrumental in communicating new features both internally and externally. This includes gathering crucial feedback from stakeholders before implementation and clearly articulating the value and functionality of new features upon launch. Furthermore, you will be responsible for defining and managing delivery milestones, ensuring seamless alignment between engineering priorities and product roadmaps.
• On the technical front, you will focus on building intuitive and high-performance web interfaces tailored for business owners in Africa. A critical aspect of this role involves implementing robust IT security and data protection best practices within a regulated financial environment. You will proactively drive architectural decisions, focusing on enhancing the scalability, observability, and modularity of our codebase. Championing code quality through comprehensive testing strategies, thorough documentation, and rigorous code reviews will be paramount.
• Operationally, you will identify opportunities to automate internal processes, thereby improving efficiency and enhancing our overall output. You will also be expected to handle production incidents with confidence and contribute to refining our tech best practices. Your leadership will extend to mentoring junior engineers, fostering their professional development through pair programming, constructive code reviews, and consistent feedback. You will represent the engineering team in cross-functional discussions with departments like Finance, Operations, and Senior Leadership, translating business objectives into actionable technical plans. Crucially, you will help set and maintain high team standards for communication, collaboration, and technical excellence.
• We are looking for individuals who possess a strong product mindset, understanding that every team member at Capi is encouraged to consider the customer, the business, and the long-term impact of their work. A solid grasp of web development, encompassing both frontend and backend best practices, is essential, with a primary focus on JavaScript technologies. Experience within a VC-backed or high-growth engineering environment, building products that resonate with customers, is highly valued. You should be comfortable navigating the dynamic and fast-paced nature of an early-stage startup, embracing rapid growth, full product development cycle involvement, and a degree of ambiguity. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are vital for effectively conveying ideas, designs, and potential solutions to both technical and non-technical colleagues and customers. A genuine passion for our mission and a desire to solve the unique challenges faced by African businesses are core to this role. Ideally, you will be based in London or Paris.
• Bonus points will be awarded for fluency in both French and English, experience in Fintech, payments, wallets, or building ledger systems, and demonstrated expertise in security and data protection best practices relevant to FCA-regulated businesses. Some of the exciting projects the team has recently undertaken include automated payouts and AI invoice approval, seamless onboarding and payment automation with the Swift network and global banking partners, a WhatsApp bot for customer quote generation, a self-serve onboarding flow for company information and KYC document collection, asynchronous workers for OCR invoice processing, and internal tooling to manage millions of dollars in transactions.

🎯 Requirements

• Strong understanding of web development, frontend and backend best practices, with a primary focus on JavaScript technologies (Typescript, React, NextJS, NodeJS, Express).
• Experience in a VC-backed or high-growth engineering team, building products used by customers.
• Comfort working in an early-stage startup environment with high pace, rapid growth, and involvement in the entire product development process.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with technical and non-technical team members and customers.
