Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead the development, implementation, and enforcement of biosecurity policies governing OpenAI’s biological and life sciences capabilities, including models used in genomics, protein engineering, synthetic biology, and public health applications.
- • Evaluate emerging AI capabilities for dual-use risks in biology, assessing both legitimate scientific use cases (e.g., drug discovery, clinical education, pathogen surveillance) and potential pathways for malicious or irresponsible misuse.
- • Translate complex biological risk landscapes into clear product requirements, access criteria, enforcement standards, user-facing policies, and internal operational guidance for engineering and product teams.
- • Design scalable policy frameworks that distinguish between broadly beneficial biological assistance, higher-risk dual-use support, and activity that must be restricted or prohibited.
- • Develop operational protocols for identifying, escalating, and responding to biosecurity misuse scenarios, including suspicious user behavior patterns, institutional red flags, and ambiguous high-risk trajectories.
- • Partner with Safety Systems, Integrity, User Operations, Legal, Research, and Global Affairs teams to make timely, principled decisions on biological risk in high-ambiguity contexts.
- • Build and refine trusted access frameworks for high-capability biological systems, including actor vetting, institutional legitimacy assessments, governance expectations, deployment suitability, and re-verification processes.
- • Create threat models, misuse taxonomies, and evaluation metrics to differentiate legitimate scientific activity from concerning misuse over time using production signals, red-team findings, user feedback, and operational data.
- • Engage credibly with external stakeholders including life sciences organizations, biosecurity experts, public health institutions, and academic institutions to align on safe AI adoption practices and strengthen societal resilience against biological misuse.
- • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure policy alignment across product launches, model releases, API access controls, and user onboarding flows in the life sciences domain.
- • Use data-driven insights and expert judgment to continuously improve policy effectiveness, measure safeguard performance, and adapt to evolving biological threats and research practices.
- • Advise technical teams on biological R&D workflows, institutional governance norms, and lab automation practices to ensure policy solutions are grounded in real-world scientific context.
- • Communicate policy rationale and risk assessments clearly to engineers, product managers, executives, external partners, and regulatory stakeholders with varying levels of biological expertise.
- • Contribute to OpenAI’s broader mission of enabling beneficial biological research while preventing catastrophic misuse, balancing scientific progress, product usability, institutional trust, and high-consequence safety.
- • Support the creation of external partnerships and strategies that connect technical policy, public health, biosecurity, and institutional governance to advance global resilience against biological threats.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of experience, or equivalent depth, in biosecurity, biosafety, life sciences R&D, synthetic biology, molecular biology, computational biology, public health, biodefense, or biological risk management
- • Strong technical fluency in one or more biological domains such as synthetic biology, genomics, bioinformatics, protein engineering, lab automation, or institutional biosafety
- • Proven ability to turn ambiguous scientific and security questions into durable policy frameworks, access criteria, review rubrics, and operational guidance
- • Experience evaluating dual-use biological capabilities with nuance, distinguishing between legitimate research, ambiguous high-friction cases, and harmful misuse
- • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical and policy concepts clearly to engineers, product teams, executives, and external stakeholders
- • Experience building cross-sector partnerships between technical policy, public health, biosecurity, and institutional governance
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to shape the future of safe AI deployment in life sciences and biosecurity
- • Work alongside world-class researchers, engineers, and policy experts at the forefront of AI innovation
- • Collaborative, mission-driven culture focused on ensuring AI benefits all of humanity
- • Access to cutting-edge AI tools and research for professional development and impact
