Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Join Virtua Health’s Magnet-recognized Labor & Delivery team at our Voorhees campus and become the steady, compassionate presence that ushers new life into South Jersey. In this per-diem, day-shift role (7 a.m.–7 p.m.), you will partner with board-certified OB-GYNs, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and support staff to deliver evidence-based, family-centered care to a culturally diverse population of more than 3,000 births per year.
  • • You will perform comprehensive maternal–fetal assessments on admission and throughout labor, synthesizing data from fetal monitors, vital signs, labs, and patient history to formulate an individualized plan of care that promotes optimal outcomes for mother and baby. Rapidly interpret EFM tracings, identify Category II/III patterns, and initiate timely interventions in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • • Safely administer and titrate high-alert medications—pitocin, magnesium sulfate, insulin, antihypertensives, and uterotonics—while continuously evaluating maternal response and fetal tolerance. Maintain meticulous documentation in Epic that meets regulatory, legal, and Magnet standards and supports accurate acuity-based staffing.
  • • Serve as the primary patient educator, guiding expectant parents through the stages of labor, pain-management options (epidural, nitrous oxide, natural techniques), and immediate postpartum recovery. Adapt teaching to adolescent mothers, high-risk pregnancies, and non-English-speaking families using interpreter services and culturally sensitive materials.
  • • Actively participate in emergency response protocols: shoulder dystocia, hemorrhage, eclampsia, prolapsed cord, and neonatal resuscitation. Lead or assist in mock-code drills, maintain current NRP and ACLS certifications, and mentor new nurses during high-acuity events to build collective confidence and competence.
  • • Champion patient safety by performing independent double-checks for blood products and high-alert drips, conducting hourly rounding, and utilizing bedside shift report to reduce communication gaps. Participate in root-cause analyses and contribute to the unit’s AWHONN-based quality-improvement initiatives aimed at reducing primary cesarean rates and improving skin-to-skin adherence.
  • • Delegate and supervise the work of surgical techs, nursing assistants, and students in accordance with New Jersey’s Nurse Practice Act. Provide real-time coaching on sterile technique, Foley catheter insertion, and fundal massage to ensure consistent, evidence-based care delivery.
  • • Rotate through triage, antepartum, OR (cesarean sections and tubal ligations), PACU, and postpartum couplet care as census demands. Maintain competency in circulating, scrubbing, and recovery roles, and demonstrate flexibility to float to our Level III NICU or High-Risk OB unit when clinically appropriate.
  • • Engage in ongoing professional development through monthly perinatal grand rounds, AWHONN webinars, and simulation labs. Present one evidence-based practice poster annually at the Virtua Nursing Research Expo and precept senior nursing students from Rowan, Rutgers, and Drexel universities.
  • • Foster a healing environment by integrating Virtua’s “Be Well, Get Well, Stay Well” philosophy into every interaction: offer aromatherapy, encourage ambulation and birthing balls, and support immediate breastfeeding initiation. Collect patient-experience data and partner with our Patient & Family Advisory Council to co-design improvements in amenities, education, and discharge processes.
