  • • Lead end-to-end human-centered research projects to inform strategy for The New York Times’ New AI Products and Platforms (NAPP) mission, ensuring reader-centric insights drive product development.
  • • Apply research-based insights and generative AI tools to accelerate prototype iteration and improve product outcomes.
  • • Own the evaluation framework for AI prototypes and products, ensuring quality, editorial integrity, accuracy, and objectivity align with The Times’ journalistic standards.
  • • Leverage AI tools to enhance and automate components of the research process while maintaining methodological rigor and ethical standards.
  • • Champion responsible and ethical AI use across product teams, staying current on LLM advancements, emerging technologies, and industry best practices in AI ethics.
  • • Integrate behavioral data, proprietary research, industry benchmarks, and A/B testing results to deliver holistic, data-informed audience insights.
  • • Collaborate with Audience Insights researchers across News Product, Marketing, Cooking, Wirecutter, The Athletic, and Games to identify synergies and eliminate redundant work.
  • • Manage external research vendors for moderation, fieldwork, and analysis, ensuring high-quality execution and efficient project delivery.
  • • Facilitate workshops, brainstorms, and co-creation sessions with cross-functional teams including Product, Design, Engineering, Editorial, and Marketing.
  • • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research using diverse methods: participatory design, in-person and remote interviews, ethnographies, co-creation, user-initiated feedback tools, surveys, card-sorting, and usability studies.
  • • Synthesize complex research findings into compelling narratives and visualized insights tailored for diverse audiences, including senior leadership and non-research stakeholders.
  • • Support early-stage 0-1 product development by helping teams identify opportunities, validate concepts, and shape new AI-driven experiences.
  • • Demonstrate deep commitment to The New York Times’ mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world, with unwavering support for journalistic independence.
  • • Contribute to a collaborative, empathetic culture within Audience Insights and across the NAPP mission to deepen organizational understanding of audiences.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 8+ years of research and insights experience
  • • Experience researching chat interfaces or GenAI search tools and using GenAI tools in professional work
  • • Experience moderating qualitative research and facilitating workshops with cross-functional teams
  • • Mastery of a range of research methods including participatory design, interviews, ethnographies, co-creation, surveys, card-sorting, and usability studies
  • • Experience executing both qualitative and quantitative research and selecting appropriate methods based on the problem
  • • Experience synthesizing complex findings into compelling narratives and visualizing insights for diverse audiences
