Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Step onto the front lines of neuroscience-medical-surgical excellence at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital, where our 8-bed telemetry-capacity unit—opened in 2018—has already earned national recognition as a Top 10 Hospital in Michigan by U.S. News & World Report. As an RN Med Surg Neuro, you will be entrusted with the care of a uniquely complex patient population that fuses high-acuity neurosurgical recovery with broad medical-surgical challenges, giving you daily opportunities to expand your clinical mastery and make life-changing differences.
  • • You will independently manage post-operative spine patients (cervical, thoracic, lumbar fusions, laminectomies, and minimally invasive procedures) as well as orthopedic-spine cases requiring extended recovery. Simultaneously, you will provide expert care for medical-neuro patients presenting with acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, new-onset or breakthrough seizures, altered mental status, poly-substance or alcohol withdrawal on CIWA protocols, Multiple Sclerosis exacerbations, and infectious or isolation cases such as meningitis or encephalitis. Balancing these diverse diagnoses demands rapid critical thinking, nuanced neurological assessments, and the ability to pivot from aggressive intervention to compassionate end-of-life or palliative care.
  • • Every 12-hour night shift (7:30 pm–8:00 am, 36 hours per week, every-other weekend) you will perform and document comprehensive neuro assessments using the NIHSS, GCS, and pupillary scales, titrate vasoactive and antiepileptic drips, interpret continuous telemetry for occult arrhythmias, and implement early-mobility protocols to prevent DVT, PE, and delirium. You will integrate evidence-based practice into bedside care, applying the ANA scope and full nursing-process framework—assess, diagnose, plan, implement, evaluate—while partnering with patients and families as co-creators of the plan of care.
  • • Your teaching responsibilities will span pre-op spine education, post-op mobility restrictions, medication reconciliation, and culturally sensitive discharge instructions. You will tailor each interaction to cognitive level, language preference, and health-literacy barriers, documenting every encounter in Epic to ensure seamless hand-offs across the continuum. You will also serve as a resource for unlicensed assistive personnel, precept new-graduate nurses, and assume charge-nurse duties when assigned, modeling clinical excellence and compassionate leadership.
  • • Collaboration is woven into every shift. You will round daily with neurosurgeons, ortho-spine surgeons, intensivists, hospitalists, clinical pharmacists, physical/occupational/speech therapists, case managers, and chaplains to coordinate diagnostics, adjust treatment plans, and expedite safe discharges. Your voice will influence quality-improvement initiatives focused on reducing length of stay, preventing readmissions, and eliminating hospital-acquired harm. You will champion a just-culture environment, report near-misses, and conduct purposeful hourly rounding to maintain zero tolerance for falls, pressure injuries, CAUTI, CLABSI, and VTE.
  • • Technology is your ally. You will leverage continuous EEG monitoring, smart-pump integration, bar-code medication administration, and predictive analytics dashboards to enhance patient safety and workflow efficiency. You will participate in unit-based research and evidence-based-practice projects—such as delirium-prevention bundles, VTE prophylaxis algorithms, and early sepsis recognition tools—publishing findings and presenting at local and national conferences.
  • • Finally, you will embody Corewell Health’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and community wellness. You will engage in resource groups, cultural-competency workshops, and outreach events that strengthen our interconnected, collaborative culture. Your unique background, experiences, and ideas will help reimagine a better, more equitable model of health and wellness for the 1.2 million lives we serve across West Michigan and beyond.

  • • Specialty certification (e.g., CMSRN, CNRN, PCCN) highly recommended within 2 years
