- • Own the zero-to-one sales motion for 2-3 First Round portfolio companies at any given time, acting as interim Head of Sales until each startup hires its own GTM leader. You will be the first dedicated revenue brain in the room, translating raw founder vision into a repeatable, scalable sales engine.
- • Architect end-to-end sales processes from scratch—define ICP, craft outbound sequences, design pilot frameworks, build pricing models, and create commission plans that align founder incentives with early revenue milestones. Every deck, one-pager, and ROI calculator you produce will be used in live customer conversations within days, not quarters.
- • Roll up your sleeves in the trenches: listen to discovery calls, provide minute-by-minute feedback, and occasionally join founder-led demos to keep high-stakes deals moving. You’ll prep founders for pilot read-outs, build the actual wrap-up deck in Notion, and draft follow-up emails that turn tire-kickers into signed contracts.
- • Run fast, fixed-length engagements (typically 4–6 weeks) that combine live working sessions with asynchronous deliverables. Expect to jump from a seed-stage DevOps SaaS startup on Monday to a vertical AI healthcare company on Wednesday, context-switching without missing a beat.
- • Build foundational enablement materials—battle cards, objection-handling sheets, ROI models, and competitive teardowns—that founders can hand to their first AE or SDR hire. Your work product becomes the institutional memory that survives long after you roll off the engagement.
- • Source and screen first sales hires: write job specs, run structured interviews, and design practical pitch exercises so founders land reps who can carry quota from day one.
- • Maintain obsessive CRM hygiene and detailed engagement notes in Notion; founders and First Round partners rely on your documentation to track progress and make follow-on investment decisions.
- • Experiment relentlessly: test value-based vs. competitive pricing, iterate on outbound messaging, and pilot new growth tactics. Share wins and failures across the portfolio so every founder benefits from collective learning.
- • Exemplify First Round’s values—respond to founder pings in hours, anticipate blockers before they surface, and treat every email, slide, and spreadsheet as a craft object worthy of refinement.
- • Embrace extreme ownership: if a pilot is stalling at the legal stage at 9 p.m. on a Friday, you’re the one drafting redlines and scheduling the Monday escalation call without being asked.
- • Thrive in a remote-first environment while optionally spending time in First Round’s SF or NYC offices for high-bandwidth, in-person founder sprints.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years as a founding AE, founding Head of Sales, or first GTM hire at early-stage B2B startups (<$10 M ARR)
- • 5+ years of quota-carrying new business experience with proven success closing $25 K–$300 K ACV deals
- • Track record of working at ≥2 startups that scaled past several million in ARR
- • Deep empathy for technical founders and ability to translate product features into business value
- • Exceptional organization and detail orientation—comfortable managing multiple founder engagements simultaneously with airtight CRM hygiene
