- • Design and ship end-to-end AI agent systems from early experiments to production, owning data access layers, retrieval strategies, and integration with Kota’s existing infrastructure including Metabase and internal APIs
- • Build and own the AI evaluation framework from scratch, including golden datasets, regression harnesses, and methods to distinguish retrieval failures from generation failures in a regulated environment
- • Identify and mitigate silent failure modes such as prompt injection and data boundary violations specific to benefits data in a compliance-sensitive context
- • Set the technical direction for AI at Kota, contributing directly to agent architecture decisions and determining where AI creates the most product leverage
- • Collaborate across the AI pod and Platform team to surface new AI opportunities, raise engineering standards through peer review, and document technical decisions with precision
- • Work closely with the AI Product Lead to translate product goals into technical implementations, ensuring alignment between user needs and system capabilities
- • Operate in an early-stage AI pod with high ownership, shaping the role’s scope as the team grows and evolving systems based on real-world usage and feedback
- • Make deliberate architectural tradeoffs between context management, tool use, retrieval strategies, and prompt design, defending decisions with technical rigor
- • Prioritize evaluation before demonstration, ensuring systems are robust before deployment, and maintain an unsentimental post-mortem culture for production failures
- • Understand the difference between retrieval and generation problems, and avoid defaulting to retrieve-everything or hardcode-everything patterns in agent design
- • Contribute to the technical culture by documenting systems clearly, communicating decisions to non-technical stakeholders without losing precision, and continuously raising the team’s standards
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years working directly on LLM or AI agent systems in production
- • Strong grasp of agent architecture, including context management, tool use, retrieval strategies, and prompt design, with ability to make and defend tradeoffs
- • Experience building evaluation frameworks from scratch, including golden datasets, regression testing, and analysis of retrieval vs. generation failures
- • Comfort working across the stack and clear written communication skills to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders
- • Background in fintech, payroll, HR tech, or benefits, with understanding of data freshness and auditability in regulated contexts
- • Experience with AWS, Azure, or the broader Microsoft ecosystem
