📋 Description

• Design, implement, and maintain distributed backend systems that process 5TB of data daily, supporting critical business logic and data flows between embedded hardware, machine learning models, mobile applications, and business intelligence tools.
• Develop and enhance tools to ensure the availability and reliability of ~30 microservices, implementing automation to reduce manual operational overhead and improve system resilience.
• Maintain the integrity and scalability of data processing pipelines by optimizing ingestion, transformation, and storage workflows across heterogeneous systems.
• Collaborate across engineering domains to bridge communication between embedded systems, AI/ML models, mobile clients, and internal analytics platforms, ensuring seamless end-to-end data consistency.
• Contribute to the development of new backend services and product features that directly impact the user experience of Eight Sleep’s flagship Pod device and mobile app.
• Diagnose and resolve complex system issues in production environments with high availability requirements, applying deep technical analysis to root causes beyond surface-level symptoms.
• Advocate for best practices in code quality, observability, monitoring, and incident response to uphold high standards of engineering excellence across the backend team.
• Participate in architectural reviews and technology evaluations to ensure the backend infrastructure evolves efficiently to support rapid product iteration and global scale.
• Work closely with SRE, data, and machine learning teams to align system capabilities with real-time sensor data processing, predictive recovery analytics, and personalized user insights.
• Own the full lifecycle of backend components—from requirement gathering and design to deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement—driving outcomes with minimal supervision.
• Embrace a high-performance culture that demands relentless attention to detail, 60+ hour workweeks when needed, and a commitment to delivering flawless execution under pressure.
• Contribute to a culture of innovation where technology is continuously pushed to enable sleep as a proactive tool for peak human performance, not a passive state.
• Translate complex user needs into scalable technical solutions that enhance recovery metrics, sleep quality insights, and device responsiveness for hundreds of thousands of global customers.
• Lead by example in a small, impact-driven team where every line of code has direct consequences on product success and member outcomes.
• Iterate rapidly on feedback loops from real-world device usage, translating behavioral data into backend improvements that enhance personalization and reliability.
• Uphold a standard of excellence aligned with top-performing organizations, where precision, ownership, and urgency are non-negotiable.

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience
• 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer or SRE
• Advanced proficiency in at least two of: Java (Scala or Kotlin), C# (F# or .NET Core), Python, NodeJS+TypeScript
• Proven experience designing, deploying, and maintaining distributed systems
• Deep understanding of cloud services and infrastructure
