Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Senior Commercial Underwriter at EMC, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining a profitable book of business within your assigned high-volume territory. This position offers a significant level of underwriting authority, empowering you to make critical decisions that drive the success of our commercial lines portfolio. You will be instrumental in evaluating and analyzing highly complex accounts, ensuring that our risk selection and pricing strategies are both robust and aligned with EMC's strategic objectives.
- • Your core responsibilities will involve a deep dive into account specifics, meticulously analyzing exposures, and assessing alignment with EMC's and the branch's risk appetite. This includes a thorough review of account premiums, historical loss data, financial statements, and the specific lines of business involved. You will leverage price guidance, motor vehicle records, online information sources, and reports from premium audit or risk improvement specialists to form comprehensive underwriting judgments.
- • A key aspect of this role is the development and nurturing of strong, collaborative relationships with our agency partners. You will serve as a trusted advisor, educating agents on EMC's diverse product offerings, underwriting appetite, and the efficient use of our systems and services. Regular agency visits will be crucial for discussing individual accounts, providing essential updates on EMC's capabilities, and proactively identifying opportunities to maximize business growth.
- • Proactive and anticipatory communication is paramount. You will engage with agents to understand their needs and the needs of their insureds, identifying potential opportunities and proactively addressing any barriers that may hinder successful partnerships. This involves a keen understanding of market dynamics and agency operations.
- • Collaboration extends to our marketing representatives, ensuring that our agents consistently receive a superior customer experience. You will work closely with them to offer appropriate coverage solutions that effectively address identified exposures, and you will be adept at clearly explaining the rationale behind your underwriting decisions to agents.
- • You will actively participate in agency planning and review processes, coordinating closely with marketing and branch management. This collaborative approach ensures that our agency strategies are well-defined, effectively executed, and contribute to overall business objectives.
- • As a Senior Underwriter, you will also serve as a vital mentor to less experienced underwriters within the team. This includes answering their questions, providing guidance on navigating complex situations such as challenging accounts, developing effective communication strategies, or managing difficult agency relationships, and clearly articulating the reasoning behind your recommendations.
- • You will support underwriting management by reviewing the work of junior underwriters, offering constructive feedback, and contributing to their training and development. This mentorship role is crucial for fostering a high-performing and knowledgeable underwriting team.
- • This position requires a strong understanding of commercial insurance principles, risk management techniques, and financial analysis. You will need to demonstrate exceptional problem-solving skills, the ability to make sound and timely decisions under pressure, and a commitment to providing outstanding customer service to our agency partners.
- • The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while consistently meeting deadlines is essential. You will leverage your excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate complex underwriting concepts clearly and effectively, including presenting information to groups.
- • While this role is primarily remote, occasional travel may be required for agency visits or team meetings. A valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle report are necessary if travel is involved. This role is ideal for an experienced underwriter seeking to expand their influence, mentor others, and contribute to the strategic growth of a financially stable and respected insurance carrier.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor's degree, preferably in insurance or business administration.
- • Minimum of five years of experience in commercial lines underwriting.
- • Demonstrated knowledge of underwriting principles, risk analysis, and financial data evaluation.
- • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to mentor others.
- • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and an aptitude for learning new systems.
🏖️ Benefits

- • Competitive paid time off (PTO) plan, including a full day of volunteer time off annually.
