Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As Buffer's primary Senior Data Scientist, you will be instrumental in scaling our data-driven decision-making processes across product and growth initiatives. This pivotal role sits at the dynamic intersection of product development, growth marketing, and strategic planning, empowering you to shape the future direction of our company.
- • You will be the go-to expert for all things data science, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to tackle critical business questions, rigorously evaluate the impact of our initiatives, and proactively uncover new avenues for growth and innovation.
- • In the immediate term, your focus will be on providing essential analytical support to our core product and growth teams, ensuring they have the insights needed to prioritize effectively and iterate rapidly.
- • Over time, a key objective will be to transition from ad-hoc analysis to building sustainable, scalable data solutions. This involves developing robust models, implementing efficient systems, and creating self-serve enablement tools that empower more teams to leverage data independently, reducing bottlenecks and increasing overall organizational data literacy.
- • You will be responsible for building and maintaining sophisticated behavioral and business models that span the entire customer lifecycle, from acquisition and activation to engagement, retention, and monetization. These models will serve as the foundation for understanding user behavior and predicting business outcomes.
- • Lead in-depth research and complex analytical projects to not only validate existing hypotheses but, more importantly, to identify novel product and growth opportunities that might otherwise remain hidden.
- • Design, execute, and meticulously analyze experiments across a wide range of product and growth initiatives. This includes, but is not limited to, A/B tests, multivariate tests, and incrementality studies, ensuring that we are making decisions based on statistically sound evidence.
- • Partner collaboratively with product managers, engineers, marketers, and designers to establish clear success metrics, develop robust evaluation frameworks, and define unambiguous decision criteria for all significant initiatives.
- • Develop and maintain reusable datasets, analytical models, and standardized reporting patterns. The goal is to systematically reduce the reliance on ad-hoc requests and foster a culture of self-serve analytics throughout the organization.
- • Play a key role in evolving Buffer's data infrastructure, definitions, and measurement strategies. As we invest in advanced analytics capabilities and personalization features, your expertise will be crucial in shaping these developments.
- • Actively leverage AI-assisted tools and workflows to streamline the analytical process, accelerate the generation of actionable insights, and democratize access to data across the company, maximizing the impact of data science beyond a single individual.
- • Communicate complex findings and recommendations through clear, compelling narratives, comprehensive documentation, and persuasive presentations, effectively influencing decisions at all levels of the organization.
- • As a senior individual contributor, you will be expected to be both hands-on with data and highly influential in strategic discussions. You will hold a strategic seat at the table for key initiatives, bringing your unique perspective, insatiable curiosity, and sound judgment to bear on ambiguous problems, rather than simply executing predefined tasks.
- • Given Buffer's lean team structure, maximizing leverage is paramount. We are particularly enthusiastic about candidates who are adept at utilizing AI-assisted workflows and thoughtful abstractions to decentralize data access, enhance self-serve analytics capabilities, and scale the impact of data science efforts effectively.
- • This role is ideal for an individual who thrives in ambiguity, possesses a deep commitment to driving measurable impact, and is excited by the prospect of transforming a product-led company into a more data-insight-driven organization over time.
- • You will report to the Director of Growth Marketing and work closely with leadership across product, engineering, marketing, and design, fostering strong cross-functional partnerships.
- • Daily collaboration with product managers and engineers will support product discovery, experimentation, and performance measurement.
- • You will collaborate with growth marketing, lifecycle, and content teams to develop sophisticated models for acquisition, activation, retention, and monetization.
- • Work closely with other data-focused teammates to continuously evolve our analytics foundations and decision-making practices, contributing to a cohesive data strategy.
- • This role demands a high degree of ownership, comfort working autonomously, and a genuine passion for cross-functional problem-solving within a small, highly collaborative team environment.
🎯 Requirements
- • Significant experience as a Data Scientist (or equivalent) in a SaaS or product-led growth (PLG) environment, with a strong understanding of SaaS metrics, growth loops, and monetization dynamics.
- • Deep hands-on experience with modern analytics stacks, including SQL-based data warehouses (BigQuery preferred; Snowflake or Redshift also relevant), BI tools such as Metabase, Mixpanel, Looker, or Mode, data transformation frameworks like dbt, and event tracking platforms like Segment.
- • Strong foundation in statistical analysis and causal reasoning, with fluency in SQL and advanced experience using Python or R for analysis, modeling, and data visualization.
- • Proven track record of owning complex, ambiguous analytical problems end-to-end, from framing and data exploration through to recommendations that influence product and business decisions.
- • Experience designing, analyzing, and interpreting experiments, including A/B testing, incrementality, and causal analyses, with a strong sense of methodological tradeoffs.
- • Demonstrated ability to balance high-impact strategic work with day-to-day analytical support, while systematically reducing ad hoc requests through better tooling, documentation, and self-serve systems.
- • Experience leveraging modern data and AI-assisted tools to increase analytical leverage, improve insight accessibility, and scale impact across the organization.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary with a formula that adjusts to cost of living and experience (range: $192,600 - $224,272 USD).
- • Fully remote work environment, allowing you to live and work wherever you are happiest and most productive.
- • 4-Day workweeks with a flexible, meeting-free fifth day for overflow tasks or personal time.
- • Comprehensive health insurance for all team members, both international and US-based.
- • Home office setup stipend of $1000 to create your ideal workspace.
- • Minimum of 3 weeks of vacation per year, encouraging work-life balance.
- • Unlimited free books (Kindle Paperwhite for you and a partner, plus all Kindle and audiobooks).
- • Growth mindset fund for annual learning and development opportunities.
- • Savings plan with a 3% company match.
- • Profit sharing when the company performs well.
- • 16 weeks of fully paid family leave for all new parents.
- • Family support fund with a stipend for each child.
- • Paid 6-week sabbaticals after every 5 years with Buffer.
