📋 Description

• As a Senior Data Scientist at Haystack News, you will play a pivotal role in redefining user experiences by leveraging advanced statistical analysis, machine learning, and causal inference to enhance content discovery and drive measurable improvements in user engagement and retention for a platform trusted by over 30 million viewers.
• You will translate complex data insights into actionable product decisions, working at the intersection of analytics and product innovation to shape the future of news consumption on streaming platforms.
• Your day-to-day responsibilities will include building and refining statistical and machine learning models to improve content ranking and recommendation systems, with a focus on news feeds and user personalization.
• You will collaborate closely with machine learning engineers to move models from experimentation to production, ensuring seamless integration into scalable systems that serve millions of users.
• A core part of your role will involve designing, executing, and analyzing rigorous A/B tests and experiments to validate the impact of product changes using causal inference methods, including hypothesis testing, power analysis, and variance reduction techniques.
• You will develop new machine learning features using text and multimodal embeddings, and explore applications of generative AI, LLMs, RAG, and AI agents to enhance content understanding and recommendation relevance.
• You will continuously dive deep into large-scale behavioral and content data to uncover hidden patterns, user preferences, and business opportunities that inform strategic product decisions.

🎯 Requirements

• PhD or M.S. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Economics, or Operations Research with 5+ years of professional experience in data science, machine learning, or a related quantitative field
• 3+ years of professional experience with large-scale online ranking or recommender systems (e.g., for news feeds, shopping, ads, or music)
• Deep expertise in statistical inference and experimental design, including hypothesis testing, power/sample size calculations, and variance reduction
• Proficiency in causal inference methods to measure product impact and translate offline analysis into measurable online improvements
• Fluency in the Python analytics stack (pandas, NumPy), statistical modeling (statsmodels or scikit-learn), and ML packages such as LightGBM and XGBoost
• Strong experience with SQL (e.g., Postgres, Snowflake) and hands-on experience with orchestration/transformation tools like dbt and Airflow (preferred)
