📋 Description

• Scale and tune high-throughput MariaDB clusters to support Kraken’s global expansion and new product initiatives, ensuring performance under heavy transaction loads.
• Strengthen high-availability, disaster-recovery, and backup strategies through validated, repeatable procedures that minimize downtime and data loss.
• Reduce manual operational toil by designing and implementing automation, standardizing processes, and enabling self-service database workflows for engineering teams.
• Improve observability by defining meaningful metrics, reducing alert noise, and ensuring clear operational signals across all database environments.
• Enhance database security through strict access controls, disciplined patching cycles, and secure operational practices aligned with industry best practices.
• Contribute to modern platform initiatives including containerized environments, infrastructure-as-code (IaC) workflows, and reproducible, auditable deployments.
• Partner with engineering teams to promote better database performance patterns, operational readiness, and hygiene across the organization.
• Participate in on-call rotations with a focus on making incident response predictable, informed by high-quality telemetry and preventative engineering.
• Design and maintain database proxies and load-balancing layers such as HAProxy, ProxySQL, or MaxScale to optimize traffic routing and resilience.
• Collaborate with SRE and platform teams to integrate database operations into CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows for consistent, version-controlled changes.
• Document operational procedures, runbooks, and architectural decisions to ensure knowledge sharing and organizational scalability.
• Champion reliability and operational excellence by aligning database practices with SRE principles, including error budgets and operational reviews.
• Build internal tools and automation scripts using Python or Rust to streamline database management tasks and improve team efficiency.
• Support multi-region and disaster-recovery database architectures to ensure global service continuity and resilience.
• Maintain deep expertise in Linux systems, networking fundamentals, and cloud infrastructure as they relate to database performance and security.
• Manage containerized database workloads on Kubernetes, including building images and orchestrating deployments at scale.
• Translate operational knowledge into scalable, auditable systems that empower engineering teams to innovate safely and efficiently.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years operating MariaDB/MySQL in high-volume production environments, including tuning, replication, and troubleshooting.
• Strong understanding of high-availability patterns, distributed database behavior, and practical failure scenarios.
• Hands-on experience with database proxies or load-balancing layers (HAProxy, ProxySQL, MaxScale, or similar).
• Practical experience with CI/CD, GitOps, and Infrastructure-as-Code workflows (Terraform experience ideal).
• Solid cloud, Linux, and networking fundamentals.
• Experience with containers and orchestration platforms (building container images and managing Kubernetes workloads at scale).
