đź“‹ Description
- • Join Butternut Box Limited as a Senior DevOps Engineer, a pivotal role within our dynamic Platform Group, where you will be instrumental in architecting and evolving our core infrastructure and enhancing the overall developer experience.
- • This position offers a unique blend of technical leadership, hands-on problem-solving, and collaborative engagement with engineering teams, a technical product manager, and key stakeholders to conceptualize and implement scalable, efficient, and highly resilient systems.
- • Your initial focus will be on critically evaluating and optimizing our existing Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. The objective is to significantly boost developer velocity, reduce lead times for feature delivery, and improve the overall reliability and efficiency of our software development lifecycle.
- • Concurrently, you will undertake a comprehensive review and enhancement of our monitoring, logging, and alerting infrastructure. This involves ensuring robust system health, enabling rapid identification and resolution of issues, and proactively addressing potential performance bottlenecks, including specific attention to database monitoring and alerting.
- • A key aspect of this role involves evaluating our current utilization of Heroku, assessing its effectiveness, and potentially recommending and implementing alternative solutions or optimizations to align with our long-term infrastructure strategy and scalability goals.
- • We anticipate this role will require approximately 30% of your time dedicated to improving the developer experience, focusing on tools, processes, and workflows that empower our engineers, and 70% dedicated to core infrastructure work, ensuring the stability, security, and scalability of our platform.
- • You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining infrastructure as code (IaC) solutions, leveraging tools like Terraform to ensure consistency, repeatability, and auditability across our environments.
- • Championing best practices in cloud-native architectures, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and microservices will be essential to building a modern and adaptable platform.
- • Collaborate with development teams to embed DevOps principles and practices early in the software development lifecycle, fostering a culture of shared responsibility for operational excellence.
- • Develop and maintain robust automation strategies for deployment, scaling, and management of applications and infrastructure.
- • Contribute to security best practices across the infrastructure, ensuring compliance and protecting our systems and data.
- • Drive initiatives to improve system observability, ensuring we have the right metrics, logs, and traces to understand system behavior and performance.
- • Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge across the team, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- • Participate in on-call rotations to ensure the availability and performance of our production systems.
- • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, evaluating their potential application to enhance our platform and processes.
- • You will be a key player in defining the technical roadmap for our platform, ensuring it aligns with business objectives and supports future growth.
- • Your work will directly impact the speed at which we can innovate, the reliability of our services, and the overall productivity of our engineering teams, ultimately contributing to Butternut Box's mission of providing the best possible food for dogs.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience as a Senior DevOps Engineer, Platform Engineer, or in a similar infrastructure-focused role, with a strong track record of hands-on implementation and problem-solving.
- • Deep expertise in cloud platforms, specifically AWS, including services such as EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, EKS, and IAM.
- • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, with a strong emphasis on Terraform for provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure.
- • Extensive experience designing, building, and maintaining robust CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar, focusing on automation, reliability, and speed.
- • Solid understanding of containerization technologies (Docker) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes).
- • Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana), Datadog, or similar, to ensure system health and performance.
- • Strong scripting skills (e.g., Python, Bash) for automation tasks.
- • A passion for developer experience and a proven ability to identify and implement improvements that enhance engineer productivity.
- • Excellent problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and a meticulous attention to detail.

- • Experience with database monitoring and performance tuning, particularly with PostgreSQL.
- • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails and its ecosystem, with an understanding of how to optimize its performance and deployment.
- • Experience measuring and improving developer productivity using DORA metrics is a significant advantage.
- • Knowledge of PostgreSQL and its associated security best practices.
