  • • Join Butternut Box Limited as a Senior DevOps Engineer, a pivotal role within our dynamic Platform Group, where you will be instrumental in architecting and evolving our core infrastructure and enhancing the developer experience across the organisation.
  • • This position offers a unique blend of technical leadership, hands-on problem-solving, and collaborative engagement with cross-functional teams, including engineers, a technical product manager, and key stakeholders.
  • • Your initial focus will be strategically directed towards optimising our existing Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. The objective is to significantly boost developer velocity, ensuring faster, more reliable software delivery cycles.
  • • Concurrently, you will undertake a comprehensive review and enhancement of our monitoring and observability stack. This includes refining logging, alerting, and performance monitoring systems to guarantee robust system health and enable rapid, effective issue resolution.
  • • A key area of responsibility will involve database monitoring and alerting. You will proactively identify and address potential performance bottlenecks within our database systems, ensuring optimal performance and stability.
  • • We anticipate this role will be structured with approximately 30% of your time dedicated to improving the developer experience, and the remaining 70% focused on core infrastructure work, reflecting the critical balance between enabling our engineering teams and maintaining a high-performing platform.
  • • You will be empowered to design and implement scalable, efficient, and resilient systems that form the backbone of our growing operations.
  • • This role demands a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating potential risks within our infrastructure, ensuring high availability and security.
  • • You will contribute to the strategic roadmap for our platform, making informed decisions about technology adoption and architectural improvements.
  • • Collaborate with engineering teams to understand their challenges and translate them into actionable infrastructure and tooling solutions.
  • • Drive the adoption of best practices in infrastructure as code, configuration management, and automated deployments.
  • • Evaluate and potentially lead the migration away from or optimisation of our current Heroku environment, assessing alternatives that align with our long-term scalability and cost-efficiency goals.
  • • Champion a culture of continuous improvement within the platform team and across engineering departments.
  • • Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing your expertise and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for infrastructure, processes, and tooling.
  • • Participate in on-call rotations to ensure the stability and reliability of our production systems.
  • • Contribute to security best practices across the platform, ensuring compliance and safeguarding our data and services.
  • • You will be at the forefront of innovation, exploring new technologies and methodologies to keep our platform competitive and cutting-edge.
  • • The role requires a deep understanding of cloud-native principles and a commitment to building robust, self-healing systems.
  • • You will be a key player in ensuring our platform can support Butternut Box's ambitious growth plans, both in terms of user base and service offerings.
  • • Your work will directly impact the efficiency and productivity of our engineering teams, enabling them to deliver value to our customers faster and more effectively.
  • • This is an opportunity to make a significant impact in a fast-paced, mission-driven company that is revolutionising the pet food industry.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience as a Senior DevOps, Platform Engineer, or similar role, with a strong track record of hands-on infrastructure management and CI/CD implementation.
  • • Deep expertise in cloud platforms, specifically AWS, and proficiency with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform for designing, provisioning, and managing cloud-based systems.
  • • Extensive knowledge of CI/CD principles, tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions), and best practices aimed at enhancing software delivery speed, reliability, and quality.
  • • A genuine passion for improving developer experience and productivity, with a demonstrated ability to identify and implement solutions that empower engineering teams.
  • • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with meticulous attention to detail to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
  • • A self-starter mentality with the ability to take ownership of projects, drive them to completion, and proactively identify areas for improvement without constant supervision.
  • • Experience with database monitoring and alerting, particularly for PostgreSQL, and a solid understanding of database performance tuning and security best practices.
  • • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails and experience in optimising its deployment and operational setup.
  • • Experience in measuring and improving developer productivity using frameworks like DORA metrics.
