We are seeking a visionary Senior Director/VP - Head of AI Engineering to spearhead the development of our next generation of AI-driven SaaS solutions.
- • This is a pivotal leadership role that demands a unique blend of hands-on technical expertise and strategic vision. As a player-coach, you will be instrumental in architecting the future of our AI platform while simultaneously building, mentoring, and leading a high-performing team of AI engineers. You will report directly to our co-founders, playing a critical role in defining and executing the AI engineering strategy. Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and deploy advanced AI and agentic applications that push the boundaries of applied AI within the commerce domain. This includes overseeing the entire lifecycle of AI systems, from initial research and experimentation through to robust production deployment, ensuring these systems deliver tangible and measurable business impact for our enterprise clients.
- • The ideal candidate possesses a proven track record of both training sophisticated AI/ML models and successfully deploying them into production environments. Experience in building and managing agentic applications, coupled with a deep understanding of machine learning systems operating at scale, is essential. You will be responsible for incubating a founding AI engineering team within our dedicated incubation group, fostering both technical excellence and organizational growth. This involves not only attracting top talent but also nurturing their development and building a cohesive, innovative team culture.
- • Your responsibilities will extend to designing and implementing scalable ML infrastructure capable of supporting the demands of model training, fine-tuning, deployment, and continuous monitoring in a production setting. A key focus will be leading the development of cutting-edge agentic applications, from conceptualization and design to training and launching agents that can operate effectively within real-world customer environments. You will establish and enforce best practices for data quality, annotation, and the creation of robust ML pipelines, thereby enabling rapid experimentation, iterative development, and ongoing performance improvements.
- • Furthermore, you will champion responsible AI development, ensuring that all models and agents deployed meet stringent standards for reliability, ethical considerations, safety, and performance. Close collaboration with product management, data science teams, and business stakeholders will be crucial for translating groundbreaking research into impactful, customer-facing features. You will be instrumental in setting high engineering standards and cultivating a culture that prioritizes technical excellence, relentless innovation, and unwavering accountability. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI in e-commerce and drive significant business value for some of the world's largest brands. This is a remote role to start, based out of Toronto, Ontario, with plans to transition to an onsite role once a Toronto office is established. Candidates must be located in the Toronto area.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering, with a minimum of 2+ years leading AI/ML teams.
- • Hands-on experience training AI/ML models, including foundation models, fine-tuned models, or specialized domain models.
- • Proven experience building and deploying agentic applications, with deep knowledge of agent design patterns and orchestration.
- • Strong track record of launching AI models and agents into production environments at scale.
- • Advanced expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning.
- • Experience designing scalable data systems and pipelines for training and inference.
- • Fluency in backend and ML-oriented programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, or C++.
- • Knowledge of modern ML toolkits and frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, LangChain, Ray).
- • Strong ability to balance hands-on technical depth with leadership, mentoring, and organizational building.
- • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with experience working directly with senior executives or founders.
- • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
