📋 Description

• As a Senior Engineering Manager at Stepful, you will lead a team of Product Engineers responsible for building the end-to-end experiences that empower students to succeed—from enrollment and program completion to securing their first healthcare job. This role is critical to scaling Stepful’s mission of expanding access to high-demand healthcare careers for underserved communities through affordable, AI-supported, instructor-led online training.
• You will provide hands-on technical leadership while managing people, dedicating approximately 20% of your time to direct code contributions, including code reviews, architecture decisions, and individual contributions, ensuring technical excellence and alignment with product goals.
• Your day-to-day responsibilities include leading your team to deliver impactful outcomes at a sustainable pace by removing blockers, improving engineering processes, and driving continuous improvement through feedback loops and retrospectives.
• You will develop engineers through regular one-on-ones, personalized development plans, skill gap assessments, and opportunity matching to support career growth and retention.
• You will foster a high-trust, psychologically safe team culture rooted in Stepful’s core values—Care first, Learn quickly, Build together, and Own it—ensuring psychological safety and inclusion are prioritized in all team interactions.
• You will recruit, interview, and onboard new engineers to scale the team in alignment with Stepful’s growth trajectory, focusing on building a diverse, mission-driven builder culture.
• You will partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and Operations teams throughout the full product lifecycle—discovery, planning, execution, and launch—to ensure the team is building the right features at the right time based on user needs and data insights.
• You will communicate clearly with stakeholders, set realistic expectations, track progress transparently, and follow through on delivery commitments to maintain trust and predictability.
• You will balance competing priorities with a bias for action, making timely decisions that advance product goals without sacrificing quality or team well-being.
• You will uphold high engineering standards by guiding system evolution through technical roadmapping, advocating for best practices in code quality, testing, and observability, and leading by example in your own contributions.
• You will oversee projects across Stepful’s core technical pillars: Learning Experience (adaptive learning and AI-powered feedback systems), Careers (job ranking algorithms and employer partner matching), and Human Connection (LLM-driven internal tools for student support and coaching).
• Through this role, you will have the opportunity to grow as a technical leader in a high-impact EdTech startup, shaping both the engineering organization and the product that directly improves healthcare access and career outcomes for thousands of learners nationwide.

🎯 Requirements

• 2+ years of direct experience managing software engineers in a technical leadership role.
• 6+ years of experience building software products with a strong full-stack engineering background, including proficiency in modern web technologies and system design.
• Proven ability to partner effectively with Product, Design, and Data teams through the full product discovery, planning, and execution lifecycle.
• A builder mindset: eagerness to engage in code reviews, ask deep technical questions, and stay actively involved in architecture and system evolution.
• Demonstrated passion for developing others, with a track record of providing meaningful feedback, creating development plans, and helping engineers grow in their careers.
