- • The AI Simulation (AISim) division is dedicated to developing and applying Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) that are rigorously grounded in the principles of physics, chemistry, and biology. Our mission is to simulate molecular behavior with unparalleled scientific precision, creating a first-of-its-kind simulation platform that dramatically accelerates discovery in the physical world, particularly within the biopharma and advanced materials industries. As a Senior Engineering Manager within this division, you will spearhead the backend generalist team responsible for the core functionalities, robust APIs, and efficient data planes that underpin our extensive R&D efforts. You will serve as the crucial bridge connecting visionary scientific research with the development of production-grade engineering solutions.
- • Your leadership will guide a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled experts towards the successful achievement of project goals and the widespread adoption of our transformative tooling. You will be entrusted with owning the technical strategy for the platform's development, establishing and upholding rigorous engineering best practices, and mentoring a team of customer-obsessed engineers. - • Key responsibilities will encompass leading and mentoring a high-performing team of backend engineers, focusing on their career development, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and promoting humility. You will orchestrate execution by managing sprint ceremonies and planning meetings, ensuring team efforts are tightly aligned with strategic product goals and maintaining a constant, responsive feedback loop between engineering and end-users. A critical aspect of your role will be maintaining quality by actively managing technical debt to an appropriate level within a fast-moving, early-stage product environment. This involves constantly evaluating the inherent trade-offs between building durable, hardened software and developing scrappy, agile prototypes to meet immediate needs.
- • Furthermore, you will be responsible for disentangling dependencies and managing schedules to optimize the predictability of delivery. You will drive critical technical decision-making, owning the technical direction and architectural discussions for the AISim simulation and data platform. This ensures that all solutions are designed to be maintainable, scalable, and secure. Maintaining seamless coordination with other engineering teams is paramount, especially where technical decisions have significant cross-team impacts. You will collaborate extensively cross-functionally, working closely with researchers, product managers, and internal stakeholders to translate complex scientific requirements into clear, actionable technical deliverables and comprehensive implementation plans.
- • You will maintain technical excellence by remaining hands-on with code reviews and critical design decisions. This includes establishing and enforcing best practices for CI/CD pipelines, API design, and cloud infrastructure management. Your deep understanding of software design principles, architectural patterns, and the intricacies of building cloud-based SaaS products will be essential. Experience leading teams in the development of early-stage products, making critical staffing, technical, and planning decisions in such dynamic environments, is highly valued. You will also demonstrate a strong ability to manage complex data systems, including proficiency with ORMs, schema design, and an understanding of transactional versus analytic databases. Your excellent communication skills will be vital for influencing cross-functional teams and translating intricate customer requirements into high-impact, effective solutions.
🎯 Requirements
- • 10+ years of software engineering industry experience, including at least 4 years in a management role with a proven track record of remaining technically hands-on while leading and growing engineering teams.
- • Proven track record of shipping high-quality software with sustained high velocity and predictability.
- • Experience leading teams building early-stage products, and making staffing, technical, and other planning decisions in such an environment.
- • Deep understanding of software design principles, architectural patterns, and building cloud-based SaaS products.
- • Strong experience with GCP (or another major cloud provider) including networking, compute, and container orchestration.
- • Demonstrated ability to manage complex data systems, including knowledge of ORMs, schemas, and transactional vs. analytic databases.
- • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and translate customer requirements into high-impact solutions.
