- • As Relay continues its rapid growth, the Senior Engineering Manager, Site Reliability will play a pivotal role in ensuring the unwavering reliability, exceptional performance, and robust resilience of our digital banking platform. This is a senior leadership position that extends beyond technical oversight, encompassing the strategic direction of our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) function and influencing engineering and product decisions across the entire organization.
- • You will be instrumental in defining the long-term vision and roadmap for SRE at Relay, ensuring that reliability is not an afterthought but a foundational element of our product development lifecycle. This involves making critical, principled trade-offs between competing priorities, such as feature velocity, operational stability, and resource constraints, all while maintaining a keen awareness of business objectives and capacity limitations.
- • A key aspect of this role is serving as the senior voice of reliability within engineering and product leadership discussions. You will proactively advocate for reliability considerations, ensuring they are deeply embedded into product planning, architectural designs, and the day-to-day delivery processes of our engineering teams.
- • In times of critical production incidents, you will act as a senior escalation point, providing calm, decisive leadership. Your responsibility will extend to ensuring clear, transparent communication with all stakeholders and driving durable, effective follow-through to prevent recurrence and minimize impact.
- • You will be tasked with strengthening Relay’s observability, performance monitoring, and overall operational maturity practices. This involves establishing and reinforcing best-in-class standards for Service Level Objectives (SLOs), operational readiness reviews, incident management protocols, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement across all engineering disciplines.
- • Collaboration is paramount. You will partner closely with stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Data, and Finance to strike a delicate balance between delivering new features rapidly, managing inherent risks, optimizing performance, and controlling costs. Your ability to foster alignment and shared understanding will be crucial.
- • A significant part of your mandate will be to build and develop a high-performing SRE organization. This includes attracting top talent, nurturing existing team members, and cultivating an environment where engineers are empowered to grow their skills, take ownership, and develop into future leaders capable of supporting Relay’s ambitious growth trajectory.
- • You will champion a culture of operational excellence, ensuring that our platform can not only meet current demands but also anticipate and gracefully handle future scale inflection points before they pose a risk to our customers or business operations.
- • This role requires a leader who is energized by complex systems, possesses strong organizational leadership capabilities, and is passionate about building resilient platforms that our customers can depend on every single day. You will be a key architect of the technical foundation that underpins Relay's mission to empower self-made business owners.
- • You will guide the evolution of Relay’s SRE function, setting strategic direction that aligns with the company's scaling objectives. This includes defining and driving the long-term reliability roadmap, making informed decisions about resource allocation and technical investments.
- • You will influence the broader engineering organization by embedding reliability principles into product planning, architectural reviews, and development methodologies, ensuring a proactive approach to system stability.
- • Your leadership will be critical in strengthening Relay’s observability capabilities, performance tuning, and operational maturity across all engineering teams, establishing clear standards for SLOs, incident response, and continuous learning.
- • You will foster strong partnerships with cross-functional teams, including Product, Data, and Finance, to ensure that reliability goals are met without compromising business velocity or incurring undue costs.
- • Building and mentoring a world-class SRE team will be a core responsibility, focusing on developing talent and fostering a culture of accountability and innovation to support future growth.
- • You will be the senior point of contact for critical production incidents, ensuring effective communication and swift resolution to maintain customer trust and platform integrity.
- • You will drive the adoption of modern infrastructure practices, including Infrastructure as Code (IaC), robust CI/CD pipelines, and comprehensive observability solutions, ensuring our systems are scalable, maintainable, and resilient.
- • Your technical judgment will be essential in evaluating new technologies and approaches to enhance platform reliability and performance, always considering the long-term implications for Relay’s business objectives.
- • You will lead by example, demonstrating calm authority, a high standard for ownership, and a commitment to developing strong, technically proficient engineers who can also grow into leadership roles.
- • You will operate effectively across multiple levels of engagement, from deep technical design discussions to high-level strategic conversations with executive leadership, articulating the business impact of reliability initiatives.
- • You will foster an environment where engineers are encouraged to take calculated risks, learn from failures, and continuously iterate on solutions to improve system resilience and efficiency.
- • Your leadership will be key in navigating the complexities of a rapidly scaling technology company, ensuring that reliability keeps pace with innovation and business expansion.
- • You will champion a culture of proactive problem-solving and continuous improvement, empowering your team to identify potential issues before they impact users and to implement robust solutions.
- • You will be a key contributor to Relay's mission by ensuring the platform's stability and performance, directly impacting the confidence and success of the self-made business owners we serve.
