- • Lead complex, company-wide privacy projects from proposal through post-mortem, owning end-to-end execution and long-term maintenance of key privacy systems.
- • Design and implement privacy-enhancing technologies using Go, Node.js, Python, and occasionally Perl to protect user data across DuckDuckGo’s search engine, browser extensions, and Privacy Pro service.
- • Enhance and expand the Tracker Radar crawler to detect emerging online tracking technologies and privacy threats in real time.
- • Develop and maintain core privacy protections including Web Tracking Protections and Email Protection features, ensuring they remain effective against evolving surveillance methods.
- • Contribute to privacy review and audit processes to ensure all product developments align with DuckDuckGo’s strict privacy principles and public commitments.
- • Own major components of DuckDuckGo’s privacy infrastructure, including system design, scalability, performance optimization, and security hardening.
- • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate privacy-by-design principles into new product features and AI-driven search enhancements without compromising user anonymity.
- • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance and supporting career development within the Privacy Functional Team.
- • Communicate complex privacy technical decisions clearly to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders, justifying design choices with data and user impact.
- • Participate in at least two annual company-wide travel events: a 4–5 day all-hands meetup and a 4–5 day team retreat, with attendance strongly encouraged.
- • Work in a remote-first environment with no core hours, maintaining an average full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.
- • Attend all required meetings via video conferencing with camera enabled.
- • Conduct regular code reviews and ensure all code is pragmatic, testable, and aligned with team standards for maintainability and performance.
- • Stay current with the evolving landscape of online tracking, fingerprinting, and surveillance technologies to proactively strengthen DuckDuckGo’s privacy defenses.
🎯 Requirements
- • Experience working on privacy solutions in an engineering capacity (e.g., tracker blocker, differential privacy, or similar technology)
- • Proficiency in at least one of: Go, Node.js, Python, Perl
- • Ability to lead and collaborate on high-impact, complex projects from proposal through post-mortem
- • Deep technical understanding of online privacy threats and existing solution space to protect against them
- • Excellent communication skills to validate and explain technical decisions to technical and non-technical audiences
- • Willingness to travel at least twice annually for company retreats (4–5 days each)
