Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Design, build, and evolve Photoroom’s public API, the primary interface through which external developers access AI-powered image processing capabilities.
- • Own the entire API lifecycle: from endpoint design (naming, versioning, structure) to implementation, performance optimization, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- • Ship features used by both self-serve developers and enterprise clients like Amazon, DoorDash, and Decathlon, ensuring reliability, consistency, and ease of integration.
- • Work at the intersection of backend engineering and AI, abstracting complex computer vision models into simple, developer-friendly API endpoints.
- • Iterate rapidly with weekly deployments, using real usage data and user feedback to prioritize features and improvements.
- • Collaborate closely with product, machine learning, backend, and sales teams to align API functionality with business needs and customer outcomes.
- • Ensure high availability, low latency, and robust error handling for an API processing over 5 billion images annually.
- • Implement and maintain API security, rate limiting, authentication, and documentation standards for external developers.
- • Improve developer experience by refining API responses, error messages, SDKs, and examples to reduce integration friction.
- • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and architectural decisions with a small, senior engineering team.
- • Balance pragmatic, fast-paced delivery with long-term architectural integrity, avoiding over-engineering while ensuring scalability.
- • Monitor API performance, usage patterns, and incidents using observability tools, and respond to production issues with urgency.
- • Translate technical trade-offs and decisions into clear communication for non-technical stakeholders including product and sales teams.
- • Contribute to the migration of the current API infrastructure, which includes transitioning from Node.js to Python-based systems.
- • Maintain and enhance tooling around API testing, mocking, and deployment pipelines to support continuous delivery.
- • Uphold code quality standards with testing, documentation, and CI/CD practices aligned with production-grade systems.
🎯 Requirements
- • Strong experience building backend systems in Python with a focus on public-facing APIs (not internal services)
- • Proven experience designing and maintaining public APIs, including versioning, consistency, and long-term evolution
- • Proficiency with FastAPI or similar async Python frameworks, including concurrency, production debugging, and performance tuning
- • Experience working in high-performing, fast-paced startup or scale-up environments
- • Pragmatic, product-minded approach with emphasis on impact, speed, and developer experience
- • Clear communication skills to translate technical decisions for cross-functional teams
