Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Own end-to-end reliability across the full data pipeline: from autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) onboard compute (Jetson-class modules, ROS 2) to topside operator systems, cloud data ingestion and processing pipelines, and the customer-facing platform.
  • • Design and implement infrastructure automation for provisioning, configuration management, deployment, and self-recovery to minimize manual intervention in routine field operations and data pipeline runs.
  • • Build and enhance observability systems using metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting to provide early, actionable signals across both vehicle fleets and cloud services.
  • • Reduce on-call burden by eliminating single points of failure, documenting tribal knowledge into runbooks, and automating manual recovery steps that currently require expert intervention.
  • • Participate in a shared 12-hour on-call rotation covering incidents across robotics and cloud systems, aligned with European and East Coast business hours.
  • • Lead and contribute to blameless post-incident reviews to improve system resilience and team response processes.
  • • Define, track, and report reliability targets including system availability, data yield, and recovery time, aligned with continuous-operations goals.
  • • Manage AWS cloud infrastructure for data processing and platform workloads, including compute, storage, networking, IaC, cost optimization, and security posture.
  • • Improve fleet-wide and vehicle-level configuration management, deployment safety, and rollback mechanisms to ensure reliable and predictable field updates.
  • • Serve as a reliability force multiplier across the organization, mentoring engineers and raising operational standards without acting as a ticket queue.
  • • Collaborate with robotics and data teams to align infrastructure reliability with mission-critical operational goals.
  • • Support field deployments and travel to Richmond, CA headquarters approximately 5–15% of the time.
  • • Operate in environments combining embedded edge computing, intermittent connectivity, and physical systems with unpredictable failure modes.
  • • Maintain a reliability mindset: instrument before guessing, automate after the second manual repetition, and document processes for system-wide resilience.
  • • Communicate clearly and take strong ownership in a small, fast-moving engineering team with high-impact, mission-critical outcomes.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 5+ years in an SRE, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering role with production system ownership and on-call responsibilities
  • • Hands-on experience with AWS (compute, storage, networking, IAM) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent)
  • • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Go, and/or Bash
  • • Experience with Linux internals, networking, and observability tooling (Prometheus/Grafana or equivalents)
  • • Comfort operating across hybrid environments including embedded/edge systems and cloud infrastructure
  • • Strong automation instincts and a track record of eliminating manual toil through system design

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Base salary range of $164,000–$220,000 annually, with upper end reflecting New York, NY metro compensation
  • • Comprehensive employee benefits package
  • • Equity compensation
  • • Opportunity to work on mission-critical ocean exploration systems with measurable global impact
  • • Support for active U.S. Secret security clearance (preferred but not required to apply)
  • • Travel to field deployments and Richmond HQ (5–15%)
