Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Cogstate as a Senior Software Engineer and become the technical backbone of products that directly improve how cognition is measured in clinical trials, hospitals, and homes worldwide. You will architect, build, and scale cloud-native applications that process millions of neurocognitive assessments every year, translating complex neuroscience into elegant, secure, and lightning-fast software.
- • Own the full development lifecycle for our flagship digital cognitive testing platform—from ideation and design through coding, automated testing, continuous deployment, and post-release monitoring. Your code will be used by pharmaceutical giants running global Phase III trials, neurologists diagnosing early Alzheimer’s, and patients taking daily brain-health check-ups on their phones.
- • Lead cross-functional squads of engineers, data scientists, UX designers, and regulatory experts. You will facilitate architecture reviews, enforce coding standards, and mentor mid-level developers while still spending at least 60 % of your time hands-on in the codebase.
- • Design highly available microservices on AWS (EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, SQS) that must pass FDA 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, and GDPR audits. You will implement zero-downtime blue-green deployments, automated rollback strategies, and real-time anomaly detection to guarantee 99.9 % uptime for studies that cannot be delayed.
- • Optimize data pipelines that ingest, transform, and analyze reaction-time data measured in milliseconds. You will tune PostgreSQL and Redis clusters, introduce event sourcing, and leverage Apache Kafka to ensure sub-second latency for on-screen cognitive tasks delivered to participants in 40+ countries.
- • Champion security-first development: threat-model every new feature, embed static/dynamic scanning in CI/CD, and coordinate external penetration tests. You will also maintain detailed design-history files that satisfy both ISO 27001 and IEC 62304 medical-device software standards.
- • Collaborate with regulatory affairs to translate evolving FDA guidance on digital health technologies into technical requirements. You will author software risk analyses, verification protocols, and traceability matrices that auditors praise for clarity and completeness.
- • Drive continuous performance improvement. Using distributed tracing (OpenTelemetry) and custom R-based analytics, you will identify bottlenecks in task rendering and reduce P99 latency by 30 %, directly improving patient experience and data quality.
- • Innovate on novel assessment paradigms—voice, wearables, VR—by building proof-of-concepts in two-week spikes and rapidly iterating based on clinician feedback. Your prototypes often graduate into revenue-generating product lines within a single quarter.
- • Contribute to open-source projects that the neuroscience community relies on, speak at virtual meetups, and publish technical blogs that establish Cogstate as the thought leader in digital cognitive measurement.
- • Foster a culture of psychological safety and relentless learning. You will institute weekly tech talks, sponsor hack-days, and create individualized growth plans that have already advanced four engineers to staff level in the past year.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years shipping production-grade software, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead role on cloud-native, regulated (FDA/EMA) applications
- • Expert-level proficiency in at least one JVM language (Java/Kotlin) or Python, plus demonstrable experience with React or Angular front ends
- • Deep hands-on expertise with AWS (EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFormation/Terraform) and container security best practices
- • Proven track record designing zero-downtime CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Argo CD) with automated security scanning and policy-as-code
- • Nice-to-have: advanced degree in computer science, neuroscience, or bioinformatics; prior contributions to open-source healthcare or data-privacy projects
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote-first culture with annual home-office stipend, co-working allowance, and three off-site summits in exciting global locations
- • 20 days PTO plus company-wide mental-health days, flexible public-holiday swapping, and a four-week paid sabbatical after four years
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and dependents, plus employer-funded HSA and 401(k) with 6 % match
- • Annual professional-development budget ($3,500) that can be used for conferences, courses, or certifications, plus paid subscription to O’Reilly and Pluralsight
