- • Design, build, and maintain distributed cloud services on AWS that ingest, process, and route high-volume sensor data from a globally deployed fleet of 600+ SmartMast units.
- • Develop and operate device management infrastructure for SmartMast units, including OTA firmware and software deployment pipelines to update systems in remote maritime environments.
- • Build reliable, low-latency data ingestion systems that handle concurrent data streams from HD video cameras, radar, SDR, AIS receivers, and GPS modules.
- • Collaborate with Edge Software and Platform teams to define APIs and communication protocols that bridge vessel-side embedded systems and cloud-based analytics platforms.
- • Design systems for fault tolerance and graceful degradation in environments with constrained, intermittent, or low-bandwidth connectivity such as Starlink, LTE, and mesh networks.
- • Instrument, monitor, and optimize production services for reliability, latency, and cost efficiency across global cloud and edge infrastructure.
- • Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to engineering standards, code review practices, and technical documentation for distributed systems.
- • Mentor junior engineers and help foster a culture of high-quality, intentional software development with emphasis on test coverage, observability, and maintainability.
- • Work across layers of the stack—from edge device firmware interfaces to cloud microservices—to solve complex technical problems operating at sea-scale.
- • Ensure system design aligns with operational realities of maritime environments, including hardware limitations, intermittent connectivity, and global scale.
- • Contribute to the evolution of the platform that powers real-time maritime domain awareness for defense agencies, coast guards, and commercial operators.
- • Engage in asynchronous collaboration within a distributed team while maintaining high standards for code quality and system integrity.
- • Operate in a startup atmosphere with significant autonomy over technical decisions and ownership of critical system components.
- • Work in-office in New York, NY with flexible hours to accommodate global team coordination and operational needs.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building production distributed systems
- • Strong command of Spring Boot for building robust microservices
- • Deep experience with AWS services: IoT Core, Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3, SQS/SNS, CloudFormation or CDK
- • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts: message queues, eventual consistency, idempotency, and service observability
- • Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes or ECS); familiarity with CI/CD tooling
- • Strong debugging and systems-thinking skills; comfortable reasoning across network boundaries, hardware constraints, and cloud services simultaneously
