- • Develop and maintain backend systems for David Energy’s platform, including APIs, databases, and third-party integrations supporting real-time dispatch of thousands of batteries across commercial buildings.
- • Design and implement new features and tools in collaboration with cross-functional teams to support the company’s “Beat the Utility” product, which guarantees small commercial customers lower electric spend than their incumbent utility.
- • Build and scale multi-battery device orchestration systems that enable real-time energy dispatch based on renewable supply and controllable battery capacity located behind customer meters.
- • Contribute to the early-stage development of an automated trading desk that buys wholesale electricity, manages financial hedges, and executes capacity and energy trades automatically across NYISO Zone J and future ISOs.
- • Make critical architecture decisions to ensure systems can scale to 10x current volume while balancing long-term robustness with immediate operational needs.
- • Collaborate directly with the Risk & Data organization to align software systems with financial risk management and grid revenue optimization goals.
- • Ensure the security, scalability, and reliability of all core infrastructure supporting energy trading, battery orchestration, and customer billing.
- • Work with Flask/Python, AWS, and PostgreSQL as primary technologies, with flexibility to adapt based on prior experience and rapid learning ability.
- • Engage in open-minded brainstorming sessions, provide and receive constructive feedback, and foster a collaborative engineering culture rooted in compassion and curiosity.
- • Explore and adopt emerging AI-based development tooling (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) to enhance productivity and code quality.
- • Support the expansion of operations from NYC (NYISO Zone J) to additional ISO regions across the Northeast, contributing to systems that scale with hundreds of new customer locations per month.
- • Maintain a strong focus on building resilient, highly available services that handle real-time energy market dynamics and distributed asset control.
- • Participate in the full software development lifecycle—from requirements gathering and design to deployment and post-launch monitoring—within a rapidly scaling Series A company.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of experience in software development with a focus on backend engineering
- • Demonstrated excellence in at least one back-end web framework (e.g., Flask, Django, Ruby on Rails), cloud service (e.g., AWS, GCP), and RDBMS (e.g., PostgreSQL)
- • Experience designing systems that scale, building resilient and highly available services, and understanding tradeoffs between simple and sophisticated architectures
- • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
- • Curiosity about leveraging AI-based development tooling to improve engineering outcomes
- • Commitment to collaborative, compassionate team dynamics and constructive feedback
