Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead the long-term reliability, scalability, and evolution of Perk’s payments, financial, and billing ecosystems as part of the Pay Sustainability Engineering team.
- • Operate across two core tracks: firefighting and platform support for critical incidents, and medium- to large-scale sustainability initiatives to address technical debt and architectural weaknesses.
- • Provide technical leadership and platform-wide visibility to help engineering teams resolve complex issues and prevent recurring failures, without acting as a delivery team for operational work.
- • Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities to improve the resilience, maintainability, and scalability of the payments platform through thoughtful refactors and system redesigns.
- • Define and shape the strategic vision of sustainability engineering within the Pay organization, partnering with engineering and product teams to align on value propositions and technical priorities.
- • Own the full lifecycle of technical initiatives—from understanding customer pain points with product teams, through design documentation, coding, deployment, to measuring impact.
- • Architect scalable, evolvable systems and data models that account for performance, failure isolation, and long-term maintenance across backend and frontend domains.
- • Establish and uphold engineering excellence by defining CI/CD optimizations, testing strategies, coding standards, frontend architecture patterns (including state management and E2E/Cypress testing), and backend practices (API versioning, caching, data migration).
- • Lead observability and SRE practices by defining SLOs, managing incident responses, and conducting blameless post-mortems to improve system reliability.
- • Oversee operational security including secrets hygiene and dependency risk management to ensure a hardened production environment.
- • Communicate complex technical concepts across multiple teams, coordinate cross-squad initiatives, and drive alignment with stakeholders to resolve technical blockers organization-wide.
- • Actively contribute to engineering guilds, lead design reviews, and mentor junior engineers through pairing sessions, feedback, and modeling best practices.
- • Leverage AI-augmented workflows daily, including AI-powered code reviews, agentic coding tools, and AI-connected Jira, GitHub, Slack, and Notion systems to accelerate development and incident resolution.
- • Maintain autonomy in decision-making while operating within cross-functional squads, with direct influence over what gets built and how it is implemented to meet company goals.
- • Embrace an IRL-first work model, collaborating in-person three days per week at the Birmingham office to foster connectivity, creativity, and team cohesion.
- • Translate complex business goals into technical roadmaps, de-risking ambiguous projects through spikes and prototyping to enable confident execution.
- • Serve as a guardian of technical quality by proactively managing technical debt and ensuring engineering efforts are invested where they create the most customer impact.
- • Raise the bar for the broader engineering organization by influencing the product roadmap with technical data and mentoring peers to elevate overall engineering standards.
🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in payments, financial systems, or billing platforms
- • Demonstrated ability to architect scalable, resilient backend and frontend systems with strong focus on performance, failure isolation, and maintainability
- • Experience leading observability, SRE practices, and incident response including SLO definition and blameless post-mortems
- • Strong track record of mentoring engineers, leading design reviews, and influencing technical direction across teams
- • Experience with AI-augmented development workflows, including agentic coding and AI-powered code review tools
- • Ability to work in-person three days per week at the Birmingham office
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to shape the strategic direction of sustainability engineering within a global payments platform
- • Autonomy to own end-to-end technical initiatives from problem definition to impact measurement
- • Access to AI-integrated development tools (AI-powered code reviews, agentic workflows, connected Jira/GitHub/Slack/Notion)
- • Collaborative, cross-functional team environment with direct influence over product and technical priorities
