- • Work on a large, mission-critical VB6 legacy codebase that supports government operations for 250+ U.S. municipalities, performing incremental modernization without disrupting live services.
- • Use AI coding tools daily—including Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot—to analyze, document, and understand complex legacy VB6 and COM/ActiveX code.
- • Refactor legacy components by building new functionality in Python and SQL alongside the existing system, ensuring seamless integration and backward compatibility.
- • Write, optimize, and debug SQL queries in SQL Server environments, focusing on performance and data integrity within a multi-tenant architecture.
- • Diagnose and resolve production issues in a high-stakes environment where system downtime impacts public services and government workflows.
- • Collaborate directly with the client’s engineering and product teams, operating as an embedded member with full ownership of assigned modules and systems.
- • Contribute to a modernization roadmap that gradually replaces legacy VB6 components with scalable, maintainable Python and SQL-based solutions.
- • Maintain and enhance documentation of legacy systems using AI-assisted tools to improve knowledge transfer and reduce technical debt.
- • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and technical discussions conducted in English with a U.S.-based client team.
- • Work within a CI/CD pipeline environment, leveraging tools like Jenkins or GitHub Actions to automate testing and deployment processes.
- • Adapt to a hybrid workflow that alternates between deep legacy code exploration and modern development in Python, SQL, and related tooling.
- • Support the transition from legacy COM/ActiveX components to modern APIs and services while preserving business logic and data relationships.
- • Engage with a team that values long-term partnerships, ownership, and continuous learning in a remote, cross-cultural engineering environment.
🎯 Requirements
- • Comfort working daily with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar)
- • Solid experience with SQL Server and relational database design
- • Experience navigating and contributing to large, complex legacy codebases
- • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills in production environments
- • Ability to read and understand VB6, COM/ActiveX, or equivalent legacy technologies
