📋 Description

• Join Motive Inc. as a Software Engineer, Backend and become the architect of scalable, fault-tolerant systems that power the daily operations of more than 120,000 fleets across North America. You will design and evolve the core services that ingest billions of telematics events per day, turning raw vehicle data into real-time insights that keep drivers safe, reduce fuel spend, and ensure on-time delivery.
• Own the end-to-end lifecycle of new microservices—from whiteboard sketches to production deployment—using Kotlin, Java, and Go on Kubernetes, while leveraging Kafka, DynamoDB, and Postgres to guarantee sub-second latency at global scale. You will write clean, idiomatic code that is peer-reviewed, unit-tested, and continuously deployed via GitHub Actions and Argo CD, shipping to production multiple times a day without drama.
• Collaborate daily with cross-functional squads that include mobile engineers, data scientists, product managers, and UX designers. You will translate ambiguous product requirements into crisp technical specs, negotiate trade-offs between speed and durability, and mentor junior engineers through pair programming and thoughtful code reviews that raise the bar for the entire organization.
• Optimize and harden the ingestion pipeline that processes 5 TB of IoT sensor data every 24 hours. You will profile JVM performance, tune garbage collection, and refactor hot paths to cut CPU usage by double-digit percentages, directly lowering AWS spend and improving customer-facing SLAs that guarantee 99.9 % uptime.
• Build and maintain the authorization and billing engines that enforce multi-tenant isolation and meter usage down to the millisecond. Your work will ensure that Fortune 500 fleets and small owner-operators alike receive accurate invoices, secure data partitioning, and role-based access controls that satisfy SOC 2 and ISO 27001 auditors.
• Champion observability best practices by adding distributed tracing, structured logging, and custom metrics to every service you touch. You will craft SLOs, set up PagerDuty alerts, and lead blameless post-mortems that transform outages into learning opportunities and prevent recurrence.
• Participate in our on-call rotation (one week in eight) with the support of battle-tested runbooks and a culture that prizes sleep. When incidents strike, you will debug live traffic, roll back or roll forward with confidence, and document fixes so the next engineer can resolve issues even faster.
• Contribute to the open-source community by upstreaming improvements to libraries we depend on—whether that is a patch to the Kafka client, a performance tweak to the AWS SDK, or a new operator for the Kubernetes ecosystem. Your reputation will grow alongside Motive’s as a thought leader in backend engineering.
• Drive data-driven product experiments by partnering with analysts to design A/B tests that measure the impact of new optimization algorithms on fuel savings and driver safety scores. You will instrument feature flags, monitor statistical significance, and iterate until the KPI needle moves in the right direction.
• Influence the technical roadmap by presenting design docs to our architecture review board, advocating for investments in event sourcing, CQRS, or serverless patterns where they deliver measurable ROI. Your voice will shape decisions that affect millions of end users and thousands of paying customers.

🎯 Requirements

• 3+ years of production experience building distributed backend services in Java, Kotlin, or Go, with a track record of owning features from conception to post-launch optimization
• Deep understanding of relational and NoSQL data modeling, including hands-on experience with Postgres, DynamoDB, or similar systems at multi-terabyte scale
• Proven ability to design and operate event-driven architectures using Kafka, Pulsar, or Kinesis, including schema evolution, partitioning strategies, and exactly-once semantics
• Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS (EKS, RDS, MSK, Lambda) in a high-throughput, low-latency environment
