📋 Description

• As a Software Engineer II, Android at AllTrails, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our industry-leading mobile application, directly impacting how millions of users discover, navigate, and share their outdoor adventures. You will be instrumental in architecting, developing, and maintaining the core features of our Android platform, ensuring a seamless, reliable, and engaging experience for our global community of trailgoers.

• Your responsibilities will extend beyond just writing code; you will be a key contributor to technical design discussions, code reviews, and the overall architectural direction of the Android application. • You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate user needs and business requirements into high-quality, scalable, and maintainable software solutions. This includes participating in the full software development lifecycle, from ideation and planning to implementation, testing, and deployment.
• A significant aspect of your work will involve enhancing the core navigation and discovery features of the AllTrails app. This could include improving our map rendering capabilities, refining the search and filtering mechanisms for trails, developing new ways for users to record and share their activities, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of our downloaded map functionality.
• You will be expected to write clean, well-documented, and efficient code, adhering to best practices in Android development. This includes leveraging modern Android development patterns, such as MVVM or MVI, and utilizing Kotlin as the primary programming language.
• Performance optimization will be a critical focus. You will identify and address performance bottlenecks, ensuring the app remains responsive and battery-efficient, even when running in the background or under demanding conditions.
• You will contribute to the continuous improvement of our development processes and tooling. This may involve advocating for new technologies, improving our CI/CD pipelines, and enhancing our testing strategies to ensure the highest level of code quality and stability.
• You will be a champion for user experience, ensuring that the features you build are not only functional but also intuitive, accessible, and delightful to use. You will consider edge cases and potential user errors, building resilient features that provide clear guidance and feedback.
• Working on an application that is used in remote locations means that offline functionality and data synchronization are paramount. You will be involved in designing and implementing robust solutions for downloading maps, storing trail data locally, and synchronizing user activity data when connectivity is restored.
• You will participate in on-call rotations to support the stability and performance of our live application, responding to and resolving critical issues as they arise.
• Mentoring junior engineers and sharing your knowledge with the team will also be an important part of your role, fostering a culture of learning and growth within the engineering department.

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3+ years of professional experience in Android application development, with a strong portfolio of shipped applications.
• Proficiency in Kotlin and Java, with a deep understanding of the Android SDK and its various components.
• Experience with modern Android architectural patterns (e.g., MVVM, MVI) and dependency injection frameworks (e.g., Dagger/Hilt).
• Familiarity with building and maintaining robust offline capabilities, including data persistence and synchronization strategies.
• Experience with performance profiling and optimization techniques for mobile applications.
• Strong understanding of version control systems, particularly Git.
