📋 Description

• Build and ship backend services that handle real payment volume at scale, owning features from specification through to production deployment
• Design and implement orchestration logic for routing payments across multiple providers, methods, and markets, including fallback mechanisms and intelligent decision-making systems
• Contribute to the full lifecycle of backend systems including checkout, payment processing, tokenization, authentication, developer tooling, and workflow automation
• Write production-ready code that is thoughtful on error paths, maintainable, and designed with the next engineer in mind, adhering to Primer’s engineering standards
• Participate in architecture and design discussions, ask clarifying questions, and learn how technical decisions are made within the Orchestration team
• Monitor and respond to system behavior in production, proactively identifying issues and collaborating with the team to resolve them
• Engage in code reviews, scoping sessions, and technical planning to shape the evolution of the orchestration layer
• Work end-to-end on well-defined pieces of work, delivering features with minimal supervision while flagging blockers early
• Maintain a deep understanding of why engineering standards exist and consistently apply them to ensure system reliability and scalability
• Collaborate closely with senior engineers on complex design and reliability challenges, leveraging their guidance while taking ownership of your deliverables
• Operate in a remote-first environment with minimal constant signals, independently resolving ambiguity and driving tasks to completion without waiting for direction
• Navigate a complex, non-simplified codebase and take ownership of technical debt, proactively understanding and improving systems in your area of responsibility
• Embrace real ownership: when something in your domain needs attention, it becomes your problem to investigate, understand, and help fix

🎯 Requirements

• Backend engineering experience with a track record of shipping working software from spec to production
• Working understanding of how backend systems behave in production and genuine curiosity about system failures
• Comfort with REST APIs and patterns that make services reliable and easy to reason about
• Real interest in post-deployment concerns: monitoring, rollout, and system health
• Willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and learn quickly from more experienced engineers
• Experience in payments, fintech, or infrastructure contexts is a plus
