Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Take full ownership of backend features from scoping through to production, delivering production-ready software with minimal direction and keeping the team informed on progress, risks, and blockers without being chased.
- • Design and deliver scalable backend services that handle real payment volume, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and correctness under high-load conditions.
- • Contribute to architecture discussions and present proposals to the engineering council, advocating for clear service contracts and simple, maintainable system design.
- • Monitor the production impact of your own code, proactively identify issues, and drive incidents to resolution with ownership and urgency.
- • Write high-quality, production-grade code that is well-considered on error paths, resilient to failure, and built with the next engineer in mind.
- • Actively contribute to Primer’s engineering standards, raise concerns about gaps in practices, and help maintain a consistent, high bar across the team.
- • Collaborate with engineers across the Orchestration team on scoping sessions, code reviews, and technical decisions that shape the evolution of the payment orchestration system.
- • Own the full orchestration layer: routing decisions, fallback logic, tokenization, authentication, developer tooling, and payment workflows that power seamless global transactions.
- • Work within a small, high-calibre team of engineers who operate end-to-end, owning their systems from design through deployment and ongoing maintenance.
- • Operate effectively in a remote-first environment where context and direction are not provided passively — you must resolve ambiguity independently and proactively.
- • Navigate and improve a complex, non-trivial codebase, addressing technical debt thoughtfully rather than working around it.
- • Engage in a culture that values mission-driven work, reflection, and collaborative problem-solving, where success is measured by impact and quality, not proximity.
- • Participate in a structured interview process including an intro call with a Talent Partner, an interview with the Hiring Manager, a role-specific challenge, and a values-alignment interview.
- • Contribute to systems that process payments across any provider, method, or market, ensuring intelligent routing and seamless user experiences for global merchants.
🎯 Requirements
- • Solid backend engineering experience with the ability to take ambiguous requirements and deliver working, production-ready software with minimal direction.
- • Strong grasp of distributed systems fundamentals, including understanding of failure modes and building systems that withstand production instability.
- • Comfortable working with REST APIs and patterns that ensure services are reliable, observable, and easy to reason about.
- • Experience owning work end to end — including monitoring, rollout, and post-deployment behavior — not just writing code.
- • Confidence to contribute to architecture discussions, ask critical questions, and push back on design decisions that lack clarity or robustness.
- • Experience in payments, fintech, or infrastructure is a plus, though depth of engineering expertise is prioritized over industry background.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote and globally distributed work environment since day one.
- • Competitive share options.
- • Uncapped holiday policy with a minimum of 25 days to be taken.
- • Co-working space access worldwide.
- • Workations and an annual company retreat.
- • The best equipment for your role and £500 towards home office setup.
- • Generous learning budget.
- • Private Medical Insurance.
- • A broad set of additional perks and benefits depending on location.
