Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Design and implement machine vision algorithms for construction site automation, including object detection, object localization, and quality control of bricks and mortar in real-world environments.
  • • Develop and deploy production-grade localization algorithms such as visual-inertial SLAM (VI-SLAM), VIO, and fiducial marker-based systems to enable autonomous robotic navigation on dynamic construction sites.
  • • Implement and optimize 3D reconstruction and photogrammetry pipelines using sensor data from depth cameras and other vision systems to create accurate site models.
  • • Integrate sensor fusion techniques using data from LiDARs, IMUs, and (depth) cameras to enhance state estimation and spatial awareness of robotic systems.
  • • Convert prototype-level machine vision models into robust, production-ready software that runs reliably in field conditions, avoiding Jupyter notebook-style development.
  • • Build tools for debugging, performance analysis, and evaluation of vision and localization systems, including characterizing sources of inaccuracies and sensor deficiencies.
  • • Take full ownership of projects from concept through prototype to deployed system, with end-to-end responsibility for design, implementation, testing, and iteration.
  • • Apply software engineering best practices including version control with Git, unit testing, automated deployment, and clean, maintainable code standards.
  • • Perform root cause analysis and debugging of system failures across hardware and software layers to ensure reliability in unpredictable construction environments.
  • • Collaborate with robotics and software teams to integrate vision algorithms into Monumental’s TypeScript-based operating system that controls robotic construction workflows.
  • • Design and implement real-time computer vision systems capable of running efficiently on embedded or edge hardware deployed on-site.
  • • Measure and improve system performance metrics for perception systems, ensuring they meet operational requirements for precision, speed, and robustness under varying lighting and weather conditions.
  • • Work exclusively in-office five days a week at Monumental’s Amsterdam headquarters near Artis Zoo, within a facility equipped with an in-house workshop and robot testing area.
  • • Contribute to a high-ambition startup environment with an experienced founding team, where shipping quickly and iterating frequently is core to the culture.
  • • Help build an operating system for on-site construction automation that enables autonomous robots to perform tasks from 3D reconstruction to path planning and inverse/forward kinematics.
  • • Bring strong software engineering discipline to a team focused on tangible, real-world outcomes rather than theoretical research.
  • • Engage in cross-functional collaboration with engineers and technicians from diverse backgrounds including Tesla, Meta, Qualcomm, and Dyson to solve complex interdisciplinary problems.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Deep understanding and experience with multiple hardware sensor systems such as LiDARs, IMUs, and (depth) cameras
  • • Experience in developing, implementing, and testing mapping, localization and state estimation algorithms such as (VI-)SLAM, VIO, ICP, and Kalman filters
  • • Proven experience in software engineering using languages such as C, C++, Python, Rust, or comparable languages
  • • Software engineering skills and best practices including Git, unit testing, and automated deployment
  • • Strong bias for action and output, with a preference for frequent shipping and fast iteration loops
  • • Strong sense of ownership and motivation to drive projects from idea to production

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Work in a beautiful, centrally located Amsterdam office near Artis Zoo with an in-house workshop and robot testing facility
  • • Collaborate 5 days a week in-office with a high-caliber team of engineers and technicians
  • • Be part of a high-growth startup at an early stage with top-tier investors and an experienced founding team
  • • Contribute to a mission that aims to transform construction through robotics and software, creating affordable, high-quality housing
