- • Design, build, and maintain software systems that control Helion’s fusion generators and the Orion fusion power plant, interfacing directly with real-world hardware including sensors, actuators, and controllers.
- • Develop distributed software interfaces that connect diagnostics, data acquisition systems, databases, and visualization tools to support real-time monitoring and operation of fusion experiments.
- • Create and improve graphical user interfaces for engineers, operators, and scientists to interact with fusion machines and testbeds, ensuring usability and clarity in high-stakes operational environments.
- • Implement software for real-time control, system coordination, and automated workflows that enable rapid engineering iteration and reliable plant operations.
- • Build reliable tools for monitoring machine health, system performance, test execution, and plant-wide operational metrics to support data-driven decision-making.
- • Collaborate closely with Electrical Engineering, Firmware, Mechanical Engineering, IT, Operations, and Science teams to integrate software solutions with complex, multi-disciplinary hardware systems.
- • Improve the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of Helion’s internal control and diagnostic platforms through structured testing, version control, debugging, and deployment practices.
- • Investigate and introduce new tools, frameworks, and infrastructure to accelerate engineering development and enhance system performance across the fusion plant stack.
- • Apply first-principles thinking to ambiguous technical problems where established solutions do not exist, requiring innovation in software architecture and implementation.
- • Work onsite at Helion’s Everett, WA facility to remain closely integrated with hardware, operators, and end-users of the systems you build, ensuring software solutions are grounded in operational reality.
- • Participate in the full software lifecycle—from requirements gathering and prototyping to production deployment and ongoing support—within a fast-paced, high-stakes R&D environment.
- • Support the transition of experimental fusion systems into reliable, scalable power plant infrastructure through robust, production-grade software development.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience
- • Strong programming ability in a systems programming language such as C++, Rust, or similar
- • Experience building software that interfaces with hardware, sensors, instruments, control systems, or other real-world systems
- • Comfortable working in Linux environments
- • Ability to work across the full software lifecycle, from requirements gathering and prototyping through production support
