  • • As a Software Engineer (SDE 3) at Carwow Ltd, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of car buying and selling across Europe by building scalable, user-centric technology that powers one of the continent’s largest online automotive marketplaces, serving over 10 million customers and facilitating nearly ÂŁ3 billion in annual vehicle transactions.
  • • You will contribute to a mission-driven engineering culture where autonomy, continuous learning, and cross-functional collaboration are valued, enabling you to solve complex real-world problems while working on products that impact millions of users through Carwow, Auto Express, evo, Driving Electric, and Car Buyer brands.
  • • Day to day, you will design, develop, test, and deploy full-stack features using Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, HAML, SASS, and Hotwire/Turbo, releasing code to production multiple times daily via Heroku and Terraform-managed infrastructure.
  • • You will collaborate closely with Product Managers, Tech Leads, Designers, and Data Analysts in cross-functional teams to break down ambiguous requirements, prioritize work, and deliver measurable improvements to user experience and platform performance.
  • • You will write clean, maintainable code with strong test coverage (TDD), document your work thoroughly, and actively participate in code reviews to uphold engineering excellence and knowledge sharing across the organisation.
  • • You will mentor junior engineers, share insights in tech lunches and book clubs, and contribute to a blameless culture that values psychological safety, continuous improvement, and innovation.
  • • You will engage with distributed teams across London, Munich, Madrid, and Porto, adapting to asynchronous communication while maintaining alignment on product goals and technical standards.
  • • You will take ownership of product outcomes, proactively identifying technical debt, suggesting improvements, and advocating for best practices in scalability, observability, and resilience.
  • • You will work with modern DevOps practices, including infrastructure-as-code via Terraform, and gain hands-on experience deploying and monitoring applications in production environments.
  • • You will be supported by an Engineering Manager who will guide your career progression using Carwow’s structured framework, helping you set goals, develop new skills, and advance toward senior or staff-level engineering roles.
  • • You will have access to a generous learning and development budget to explore emerging technologies, attend conferences, or earn certifications that align with your growth and the company’s technical roadmap.
  • • You will contribute to a diverse, inclusive workplace where your background, perspective, and ideas are valued, and where equitable hiring and promotion practices ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience as a software engineer with Ruby on Rails, including backend development and familiarity with Hotwire/Turbo and SASS for frontend enhancement.
  • • Comfortable working across the full stack, with ability to contribute to both backend logic and frontend user interfaces using HAML, SASS, and JavaScript.
  • • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in distributed, cross-functional teams alongside Product Managers, Designers, and Data Analysts.
  • • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of loosely defined tasks, break them into actionable deliverables, and drive outcomes with minimal supervision.
  • • Familiarity with modern engineering practices such as TDD, Git, Kafka, and Heroku, with a willingness to learn and adapt to new tools.
  • • Commitment to writing maintainable, well-tested, and documented code that supports long-term product sustainability and team scalability.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Fully remote working arrangement with optional access to offices in London, Munich, Madrid, and Porto, plus 4–5 annual company-funded trips to London for team bonding and social events.
  • • Competitive salary package complemented by matched pension contributions, share options, and Vitality Private Healthcare including eyecare vouchers and Life Assurance.
  • • Enhanced holiday entitlement starting at 28 days annually, increasing to 30 days after three years and 35 days after ten years, with additional days for wedding, moving house, and the option to purchase three extra days per year.
