- • Serve as the primary legal advisor on employment law matters for a fully remote, nationwide workforce, providing strategic guidance on worker classification, workplace policies, employee performance management, wage and hour compliance, FMLA, ADA accommodations, EEOC matters, discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, and wrongful discharge.
- • Lead legal compliance efforts related to healthcare privacy and security, including interpretation and application of HIPAA, state consumer privacy laws, and data breach response protocols.
- • Draft, review, and negotiate critical agreements including Business Associate Agreements (BAAs), Data Use Agreements, Security Agreements, and other vendor contracts impacting data handling and patient information.
- • Advise internal teams across HR, IT, and Security on legal risks associated with remote operations, ensuring alignment with federal and multi-state employment and privacy regulations.
- • Provide practical, actionable legal guidance on emerging state AI laws related to workplace monitoring and automated decision-making in employment contexts.
- • Build and scale foundational legal processes in a fast-paced, high-growth digital health startup environment to support rapid expansion while maintaining compliance.
- • Collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex legal requirements into operational workflows that enable business growth without compromising legal integrity.
- • Manage the full contract lifecycle for key vendor and partner agreements, ensuring terms protect company interests and comply with healthcare and data privacy standards.
- • Stay current on evolving legal landscapes in digital health, remote work, and AI regulation to proactively identify and mitigate legal risks before they impact operations.
- • Contribute to the development of company-wide policies and training programs that promote lawful, equitable, and inclusive workplace practices across all U.S. states (excluding Hawaii).
- • Act as a trusted partner to leadership in navigating legal challenges unique to platform-based, gig-economy, and telehealth business models.
- • Support the company’s mission of destigmatizing mental healthcare by ensuring all legal frameworks uphold ethical, compassionate, and patient-centered practices.
- • Represent Rula in legal matters with regulatory bodies, external counsel, and third-party vendors while maintaining strict confidentiality and data security standards.
- • Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal operations through documentation, process automation, and knowledge sharing across departments.
- • Ensure all legal activities align with Rula’s core values of equity, inclusion, and holistic well-being, particularly in supporting a diverse, distributed workforce.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of progressive, relevant legal experience as a practicing attorney
- • 5+ years of employment law experience covering worker classification, wage and hour, FMLA, ADA, EEOC, discrimination, harassment, and wrongful discharge
- • 5+ years of healthcare privacy and security law experience including HIPAA, state consumer privacy laws, BAA negotiation, and data breach response
- • Strong writing, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills to deliver succinct, practical legal guidance in a fast-paced environment
- • Experience with state AI laws in employment and privacy contexts (e.g., workplace monitoring, automated decision-making)
- • Demonstrated success serving as in-house counsel in a high-growth technology, digital health, or healthcare startup
