Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • As a Sr. Staff Battery Pack Design Engineer at Ridealso Inc., you will serve as the critical technical bridge between advanced battery design and scalable mass production, ensuring that innovative battery packs transition seamlessly from prototype validation to reliable, high-volume manufacturing—directly enabling ALSO’s mission to deliver affordable, enjoyable, and 10-50x more efficient small EVs that replace car miles with sustainable mobility.
  • • You will lead mechanical design improvements by owning the end-to-end development of battery pack prototypes, designing and executing DOE test plans both in-house and with contract manufacturers, and driving design-for-manufacturing (DFM) optimizations at component suppliers and FATP CMs to enhance yield, reduce cost, and improve manufacturability without compromising performance or safety.
  • • You will ensure rigorous validation and compliance by interpreting mechanical (shock/vibe), environmental (thermal/humidity), and safety (propagation/crush) test results, diagnosing failures, and implementing targeted design tweaks to meet UN 38.3, UL 1642, SAE J2464, and other industry standards, while maintaining traceability and documentation for regulatory approval.
  • • You will act as the primary technical liaison between ALSO’s engineering headquarters and global Battery Contract Manufacturers (CM), reviewing First Article Inspections (FAI), analyzing CPK/PPK data for process capability, identifying production bottlenecks, and leading onsite resolution efforts (2–6 weeks/year travel) to stabilize manufacturing lines and ensure consistent quality at scale.
  • • You will define and scope lifecycle testing strategies focused on long-term quality and reliability, including accelerated aging, vibration endurance, and thermal cycling, to improve battery pack durability, assembly integrity, and field performance while reducing warranty risk and enhancing customer trust.
  • • You will collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, thermal, materials, and supply chain teams to integrate mechanical design with electrical interconnects, cell selection, and module architecture, ensuring holistic battery platform advancement that supports ALSO’s vertically integrated EV vision.
  • • You will mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical knowledge sharing, fostering a culture of first-principles thinking, rigorous experimentation, and continuous improvement in battery engineering practices across the organization.
  • • You will operate in a fast-paced, high-velocity startup environment where priorities shift rapidly, requiring adaptability, ownership, and the ability to balance deep technical work with urgent production needs—directly impacting time-to-market and production readiness.
  • • You will join a world-class team of builders and innovators from Rivian, Tesla, Apple, Bosch, and outdoor recreation leaders, united by a shared passion to redefine urban mobility through vertically integrated, delightful, and hyper-efficient EVs that make sustainable transportation accessible to all.
  • • In this role, you will achieve mastery in scaling battery technology from lab to line, gaining rare end-to-end ownership of a critical EV subsystem—positioning you as a leader in battery industrialization and enabling you to shape the future of sustainable transportation through tangible, high-impact engineering contributions.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with strong fundamentals in engineering and physics
  • • 8–10+ years of hands-on experience in battery engineering, including cell selection, module hardware design, and electrical interconnects
  • • Proven ability to lead and execute complex battery platform projects from prototype to production validation
  • • Deep understanding of battery safety and reliability standards (UN 38.3, UL 1642, SAE J2464) and ability to interpret test data to drive design improvements
  • • Expertise in 3D modeling and drafting using Catia V6, with structural and thermal simulation experience using ANSYS, Altair HyperWorks, or similar CAE tools
  • • Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing processes including laser welding, wire bonding, and ultrasonic welding for battery assembly

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Robust health coverage: 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance with FSA and HSA options
  • • One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates for personalized healthcare support
  • • Rich fertility and family-building benefits through Progyny, including IVF, adoption, and surrogacy support
  • • Flexible time off policy to support work-life balance and personal well-being
  • • 401(k) retirement plan with company match to support long-term financial security
