📋 Description

• Build and scale Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS), a configurable, multi-tenant travel commerce engine that powers booking experiences for global partners including banks, airlines, and fintech leaders.
• Own end-to-end development of backend features that connect cardholder behavior to personalized travel offers, driving incremental spend and partner competitiveness.
• Architect scalable, foundational systems that enable rapid deployment of new partner experiences with minimal custom engineering.
• Leverage AI agents and automated workflows to accelerate development cycles, orchestrating tools to ship features faster while maintaining reliability and safety.
• Design and implement guardrails and feedback loops to ensure AI-assisted development remains productive, accurate, and aligned with product goals.
• Work autonomously in a low-process environment with senior engineers, driving technical decisions through asynchronous documentation and clear specs.
• Collaborate directly with product managers and business partners to define roadmap priorities and refine technical requirements based on customer impact.
• Improve codebase maintainability and velocity for both human engineers and AI agents by identifying and executing architectural improvements.
• Focus primarily on backend systems using Scala and GCP services, but use AI tooling to contribute across the stack as needed — frontend contributions are expected when necessary to ship complete features.
• Translate customer experience goals into technical architecture, prioritizing real-world impact over theoretical elegance.
• Articulate tradeoffs in design decisions clearly, explaining not just how a solution works but why it was chosen and what compromises were made.
• Contribute to a diverse, feedback-rich culture by giving and receiving constructive input to foster personal and team growth.
• Ship complete, production-ready features from concept to deployment, with ownership over backend logic, APIs, data models, and partner-facing interfaces.
• Continuously evaluate the strengths and limitations of LLMs, applying judgment to determine when to trust automated outputs and when to intervene manually.
• Drive innovation in travel commerce by transforming Hopper’s fintech products — such as Cancel for Any Reason and Flight Disruption Assistance — into scalable B2B offerings for enterprise partners.
• Support the growth of HTS, which represents over 75% of Hopper’s business and serves partners like Capital One, Nubank, Air Canada, and CommBank.

🎯 Requirements

• Experience designing and shipping scalable distributed systems, preferably in Scala or a similar functional/strongly-typed language.
• Proven ability to orchestrate AI agents and automated workflows to build and maintain complex software systems, with understanding of guardrails and feedback loops.
• Strong product thinking anchored in customer experience, not just technical perfection.
• Demonstrated track record of owning features end-to-end across backend and cross-stack boundaries.
• Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs clearly and drive consensus asynchronously through documentation.
• Willingness to rapidly learn and work with Scala and GCP services, even if coming from Go, Python, Java, or another backend stack.
