Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • Build and scale the Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS) platform, a configurable, multi-tenant travel commerce engine used by global partners including banks, airlines, and fintech leaders to power hotel and travel booking experiences.
- • Own end-to-end feature delivery from backend systems to partner-facing surfaces, leveraging AI agents and automated workflows to accelerate development cycles while maintaining reliability and safety.
- • Architect scalable, foundational patterns that enable rapid launch of new partner experiences across a growing network of 410M+ cardholders.
- • Identify and implement codebase improvements that enhance both human and AI agent velocity, ensuring systems are maintainable, observable, and optimized for AI-assisted development.
- • Collaborate directly with product managers and business partners to define, refine, and prioritize the roadmap based on customer impact and business outcomes.
- • Design and enforce guardrails and feedback loops for AI-assisted development to ensure output quality, consistency, and alignment with product goals.
- • Work in a low-process, high-autonomy environment where decisions are made asynchronously through thoughtful documentation and technical specs.
- • Drive technical consensus across senior engineering teams by clearly articulating tradeoffs, architectural decisions, and the rationale behind system design choices.
- • Focus primarily on backend systems built in Scala and GCP services, but use AI tooling to move fluidly across the stack as needed — no expectation to write production-grade React from memory.
- • Contribute to a culture of open feedback, continuous learning, and psychological safety within small, high-impact teams.
- • Translate customer behavior data into actionable intelligence layers that help partners connect cardholders with the right travel offers at the right time, driving incremental spend and competitive differentiation.
- • Evolve Hopper’s Commerce platform from a travel vendor into a strategic card partner by embedding fintech products like Cancel for Any Reason and Flight Disruption Assistance into partner direct channels.
- • Maintain a product-first mindset: prioritize customer experience and business outcomes over technical elegance, ensuring architecture serves real user needs.
- • Demonstrate mastery-level willingness to learn Scala if coming from another backend language (Go, Python, Java, etc.), with emphasis on rapid adaptation and systems thinking.
- • Ship features faster than traditional engineering cycles by orchestrating AI agents, not just using them for code completion — understanding when to trust LLM output and when to intervene.
🎯 Requirements
- • Experience designing and shipping complex distributed systems at scale
- • Proven ability to orchestrate AI agents and automated workflows to build and maintain production systems
- • Strong product thinking anchored in customer experience, not just technical perfection
- • Mastery-level willingness to learn Scala or existing expertise in Scala, Go, Python, or Java
- • Demonstrated ability to articulate technical tradeoffs and decision rationale clearly
- • Experience establishing guardrails and feedback loops for AI-assisted development
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary with pre-IPO equity packages
- • Enrollment in Hopper-sponsored Health Collective covering medical and dental insurance options
- • Private insurance coverage for Accidental Death and Long Term Disability, including Excess and Gap insurance
- • Cash allowance provided for pension savings in lieu of a formal pension plan
- • Unlimited PTO
- • Flexdesk coworking All Access Pass and work-from-home stipend
