• We are actively seeking a Staff Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the next critical phase of The Zebra's product ecosystem. This position is ideally suited for a seasoned engineer who possesses deep-seated expertise in either backend or frontend development. Crucially, this individual must also bring a keen curiosity and sound judgment, enabling them to collaborate effectively across the entire technology stack and exert significant influence over technical direction at a system-wide level.
• As a Staff Software Engineer, you will assume a leadership position within a team dedicated to expanding The Zebra's innovative product offering. Your responsibilities will encompass the design, development, and continuous evolution of sophisticated systems. These systems will underpin new product capabilities while rigorously upholding the highest standards for scalability, reliability, and an exceptional developer experience. This role is designed with intentional flexibility in mind. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a strong leaning towards either backend or frontend development, provided they are comfortable and adept at collaborating across these boundaries and actively contributing to architectural discussions that encompass the entire system.
• You will be expected to cultivate an in-depth understanding of The Zebra's intricate technical landscape. This deep knowledge will empower you to articulate technical trade-offs with clarity, provide essential technical context for decision-making, and effectively guide strategic choices in both engineering and product-focused conversations. Your ability to bridge the gap between technical execution and business objectives will be paramount.
• Your day-to-day will involve a dynamic mix of strategic planning and hands-on execution. You will be instrumental in designing and implementing robust, high-quality systems, leveraging Python for our backend services and React with Next.js for our frontend applications. While your primary focus will align with your core strengths, you will be expected to contribute meaningfully across the full stack as the needs of complex, cross-team initiatives demand, ensuring seamless integration and delivery from initial concept to final deployment.
• A key aspect of this role is acting as a technical lead. This involves building profound system knowledge, enabling you to guide teams through complex architectural trade-offs and foster best practices. You will collaborate closely with a diverse group of talented engineers, product managers, and designers, facilitating rapid iteration cycles while steadfastly maintaining the integrity and quality of our codebase. Your influence will extend to identifying high-impact opportunities for enhancing system scalability, improving overall stability, and boosting developer productivity through thoughtful process improvements and tooling.
• Furthermore, you will be a champion for sound engineering principles, adeptly balancing the critical imperatives of quality, speed to market, and overall business impact. This includes providing invaluable mentorship and technical guidance to your peers through constructive code reviews, insightful design discussions, and proactive collaboration. You will also play a role in evaluating and potentially introducing new tools or technologies, ensuring they offer clear, practical value and align with our long-term technical vision. 🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software development experience.
• Deep expertise in either backend development (Python, APIs, data modeling, distributed systems) OR frontend development (React, Next.js, performance, accessibility, user experience).
• Proven experience building and evolving scalable systems in production environments.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large technical initiatives while still making impactful individual contributions.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to varied audiences.
• Product-minded thinking and empathy for end users.
