Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the statistical backbone of Torc’s safety story: design, execute, and defend rigorous analyses that determine whether our autonomous trucks are ready for public roads and regulatory approval. Your models will be the evidence regulators, customers, and executives rely on.
- • Translate petabytes of real-world driving data into defensible risk estimates. You will mine time-series sensor logs, disengagement reports, near-miss events, and post-incident reconstructions to quantify how changes in perception, planning, or control algorithms shift the probability and severity of harm.
- • Build production-grade statistical workflows that run nightly on fresh fleet data. Automate anomaly detection, trend analysis, and confidence-bound updates so engineering teams wake up to clear, prioritized safety signals instead of raw logs.
- • Serve as the bridge between safety, systems, and software teams. Convert complex Bayesian posteriors or survival-analysis curves into plain-language recommendations that firmware engineers can implement the same afternoon.
- • Invent new metrics when existing ones fall short. Whether it is a novel surrogate safety measure for cut-in scenarios or a calibrated risk ratio for weather-related degradation, you will publish and defend these metrics to both internal stakeholders and external regulators.
- • Lead cross-functional safety reviews. Present statistical evidence to executives, federal agencies, and insurance partners; respond to adversarial questions with transparent methodology and reproducible code.
- • Mentor junior analysts and data scientists. Establish coding standards for statistical rigor (e.g., version-controlled notebooks, unit-tested estimators, pre-registration of hypotheses) and run weekly clinics on causal inference and extreme-value theory.
- • Contribute to Torc’s safety case documentation. Your analyses will feed directly into ISO 26262, UL 4600, and FMCSA submissions, ensuring every claim is backed by data and every assumption is stress-tested.
- • Continuously scan academic and regulatory landscapes. Bring in cutting-edge techniques (e.g., counterfactual simulation, rare-event Monte Carlo, probabilistic graphical models) and pilot them on Torc’s data to keep our safety evaluation ahead of industry norms.
- • Champion a culture of evidence-based decision making. When intuition and data clash, you will calmly, clearly, and convincingly show which path saves more lives and reduces more liability.
🎯 Requirements
- • PhD or MS in Statistics, Biostatistics, Applied Mathematics, or related quantitative field with 6+ years applying rigorous statistical methods to real-world, high-stakes problems
- • Expert-level fluency in Python or R for statistical computing (pandas, NumPy/SciPy, PyMC, TensorFlow Probability, or equivalent) and SQL for large-scale data extraction
- • Demonstrated experience designing and defending statistical analyses to regulatory bodies, insurers, or safety-critical industries (automotive, aerospace, medical devices, etc.)
- • Deep knowledge of causal inference, survival analysis, extreme-value theory, or rare-event modeling applied to time-series or spatiotemporal datasets
- • Nice-to-have: familiarity with ISO 26262, UL 4600, SOTIF, or FMCSA safety evaluation frameworks; experience with autonomous-vehicle sensor data (LiDAR, camera, CAN); track record of peer-reviewed publications or patents in quantitative risk assessment
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote-first culture with flexible hours and quarterly in-person summits in Ann Arbor, MI, ensuring you can live where you thrive while staying tightly connected to the team
- • Competitive salary plus annual performance bonus and equity in a Daimler-backed company positioned to lead the $700B autonomous-freight market
- • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and mental-wellness coverage for you and dependents, plus 401(k) with 6% company match and immediate vesting
- • Annual $3,000 professional-development stipend for conferences, courses, or certifications, plus paid time to pursue research and publish findings
- • 20 days PTO, 12 paid holidays, and a "right to disconnect" policy that protects evenings and weekends so you can recharge and keep doing your best work
