📋 Description

• Join Parafin Inc. as a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, and be at the forefront of a significant expansion into Portland, Oregon. This is a unique opportunity to be among the first engineers hired in this new location, working directly with our Portland engineering leader to establish and shape a brand-new team. You will play a pivotal role in building, scaling, and maintaining the robust financial infrastructure that powers our innovative embedded financial products.
• As a key member of this foundational team, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and deploying scalable, reliable, and componentized systems. These systems are the backbone of our merchant-facing products and services, providing seamless interfaces that accelerate product development and empower small businesses.
• You will take ownership of critical technical projects, guiding them from initial ideation through to successful deployment. This involves not only writing high-quality code but also making strategic technical decisions that impact the long-term health and scalability of our platform.
• Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. You will work closely with diverse cross-functional teams, including Product Managers who define our vision, Data Scientists who uncover insights, Legal experts who ensure compliance, and Accounting professionals who manage our financial operations. This ensures that our technology solutions are comprehensive and meet the needs of all stakeholders.
• A significant aspect of this role involves driving continuous improvement. You will be responsible for enhancing system performance, bolstering security measures, and ensuring the overall reliability of our platform through ongoing optimization and proactive problem-solving.
• As a Staff Engineer, you will serve as a technical mentor and guide to your colleagues. You will foster a culture of technical excellence, sharing your knowledge, promoting best practices, and helping to elevate the skills of the entire team.
• You will also play a crucial role in the growth of the Portland team. Collaborating closely with the local engineering leader, you will actively participate in recruiting additional talented engineers to join us in building a world-class engineering hub.

• We handle the entire complexity of capital markets, underwriting, credit risk, servicing, compliance, and customer service, allowing our partners to focus on their core business. Our technology is the engine that makes this possible, and you will be a key architect of that engine.

• The team will initially operate remotely, with plans to establish a physical presence and a hybrid work model (three days per week in the office) as the team grows. This is the first major engineering expansion outside of our San Francisco headquarters, making this a truly ground-floor opportunity.
• You will be reporting directly to an engineering leader who is based full-time in Portland, ensuring strong local leadership and support.
• We are looking for individuals who are passionate about building impactful financial products and are excited by the prospect of building a new team from the ground up. Your contributions will directly shape the future of Parafin's engineering organization in Portland.
• This role requires a deep understanding of distributed systems, databases, and API development, ensuring our systems are not only functional but also robust and scalable to meet the demands of a rapidly growing fintech company.
• You will be instrumental in improving system performance, security, and reliability through continuous optimization, ensuring our financial products are always available and secure for our users.
• Your expertise in backend development, ideally with languages like Python or Go, will be crucial in building and maintaining the core services that drive our financial products.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP is essential for designing and implementing scalable and resilient systems that can handle significant transaction volumes and data loads.

🎯 Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience, with a preference for experience in fintech or financial services.
• Strong proficiency in backend development, ideally with Python, Go, or similar modern programming languages.
• Proven experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP) and designing scalable, distributed systems.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and robust API development (RESTful, gRPC).
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical work experience.
