- • Datadog's Product Analytics team is at the forefront of a rapidly expanding product area, seeking a seasoned Staff Software Engineer to spearhead the technical vision and execution of our user analytics platform. This critical group develops sophisticated services that empower our customers to gain deep insights into user behavior. You will be instrumental in building systems that reveal key metrics such as user retention, drop-off points, and the impact of product changes on growth, enabling data-driven decision-making across organizations.
- • This role is pivotal in shaping a young and dynamic segment of Datadog's offerings. We are extending our reach beyond our traditional engineering audience to encompass Product Managers, Designers, and Growth teams. To effectively serve these new user personas, we need to significantly enhance our backend capabilities. This includes optimizing the querying of historical data, adapting our storage paradigms to handle analytical workloads, and designing systems specifically tailored for analytics rather than solely for technical telemetry.
- • As a Staff Engineer, you will be the driving force behind the architecture, evaluation, and successful delivery of cutting-edge systems. These systems will empower customers to explore over a year of behavioral data, execute complex funnel and retention analyses at scale, and achieve these results with low latency and unwavering high reliability. Your contributions will directly impact how businesses understand and interact with their users.
- • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, and design, to architect and deliver a robust backend platform meticulously engineered for product analytics workloads. This involves understanding diverse user needs and translating them into scalable and efficient technical solutions.
- • A significant aspect of this role involves leading high-visibility technical initiatives. This includes defining the strategic technical roadmap for the entire Product Analytics domain, ensuring alignment across multiple engineering teams around shared objectives, and establishing consistent architectural principles. Your leadership will guide the evolution of the platform.
- • You will operate across organizational boundaries, acting as a bridge between product requirements and the selection and integration of appropriate internal or external technologies. This requires a strategic understanding of the technology landscape and the ability to make informed build-versus-buy decisions.

You will guide and develop the skills of other engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and helping to grow the next generation of senior engineering talent within the team. 🎯 Requirements
- • 10+ years of backend engineering experience, with a proven track record of designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems.
- • Deep expertise in distributed systems, large-scale data processing, and experience with data warehousing or analytical databases.
- • Strong proficiency in SQL, query optimization techniques, and working with large analytical datasets. Experience with data modeling for analytical purposes is a plus.
- • Experience leading complex technical initiatives, defining roadmaps, and aligning multiple engineering teams around technical strategies. Ability to mentor and grow other engineers is essential.
