Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Ship real code on day one. As a Summer 2026 Software Engineering Intern you will pair with a senior mentor to design, build, and release features that thousands of Workiva customers rely on every day. Whether you gravitate toward backend services in Java that power Global Search at scale or frontend experiences in TypeScript/JavaScript that delight users in Workiva Assistant, your code will reach production within weeks, not months.
- • Own a slice of the product. You will be assigned a discrete, high-impact project that aligns with team OKRs—past intern deliverables have ranged from a new developer CLI that cut build times by 30 % to an accessibility refactor that improved screen-reader compatibility for 2 M+ documents. You will write user stories, estimate effort, and demo progress every sprint, gaining end-to-end ownership of a feature from whiteboard to release.
- • Practice modern, cloud-native engineering. You will deploy containerized micro-services to Google App Engine and AWS, instrument them with distributed tracing, and monitor them in Datadog. You will practice trunk-based development, open pull requests daily, and participate in rigorous code reviews where senior engineers coach you on idiomatic Java, TypeScript, and React patterns.
- • Collaborate across disciplines. Daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retros bring together product managers, UX designers, QA, and DevOps. You will present technical spikes to the team, translate Figma mocks into pixel-perfect components, and coordinate with QA to write automated tests in Jest and Cypress. Clear, concise communication—both verbal and written—is essential.
- • Level-up through continuous feedback. Every intern is paired with a dedicated mentor who conducts weekly 1:1s, code walk-throughs, and career conversations. You will shadow on-call rotations, join architecture guild meetings, and attend internal tech talks on topics like event sourcing and chaos engineering. By summer’s end you will have a personalized growth plan and a portfolio of commits in Workiva’s monorepo.
- • Champion quality and security. You will write unit, integration, and contract tests that maintain >80 % coverage, participate in security threat-modeling sessions, and complete Workiva’s privacy and compliance training. Your work must satisfy SOC 2 controls and pass automated vulnerability scans before merging.
- • Iterate rapidly in an agile environment. Two-week sprints, continuous integration, and feature flags enable multiple daily releases. You will use Jira to track tasks, update burndown charts, and surface blockers early. Retrospectives every other week give you a voice in refining team processes.
- • Build for global scale. Workiva’s platform supports millions of concurrent users preparing SEC filings, ESG reports, and SOX documentation. You will optimize SQL queries that scan petabytes of data, implement caching layers with Redis, and ensure sub-second response times for search autocomplete across continents.
- • Embrace a culture of inclusion and growth. Workiva’s intern cohort is a vibrant community—expect virtual coffee chats with executives, hackathons judged by the CTO, and volunteer days with local STEM nonprofits. You will present your project at the end-of-summer Demo Day to an audience of engineers, product leaders, and the CEO.
- • Work where you work best. The internship is fully remote within the United States; reliable high-speed internet is your only requirement. Optional coworking stipends are available if you prefer a local hub, and all interns receive the same hardware and access as full-time engineers.
