đź“‹ Description
- • As a System Software Engineer on OpenAI’s First-Party Hardware team, you will design, build, integrate, and validate low-level system software critical to the manageability, health, and reliability of AI-native hardware systems, directly enabling the deployment of advanced AI workloads in production environments.
- • Day to day, you will develop firmware and system software for BMC, Redfish, gNMI telemetry, BIOS/UEFI interactions, platform drivers, and hardware diagnostics; own integration and acceptance of partner software releases; build automation and CI infrastructure for lab testing; debug complex hardware-software issues across power, thermals, boot, and network interfaces; and collaborate with cross-functional teams to define software contracts and drive platform readiness from bring-up to production.
- • You will join a specialized hardware organization at OpenAI focused on co-designing AI-optimized silicon and system-level solutions, working closely with research, software, manufacturing, and infrastructure teams to deliver production-grade hardware for AI supercomputing.
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in low-level systems engineering, gain end-to-end ownership of hardware enablement pipelines, influence the design of AI-optimized platforms, and contribute to scalable, reliable infrastructure that supports cutting-edge AI research and deployment.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of hands-on experience in low-level system software, embedded software, firmware, BMC, platform software, device drivers, or hardware diagnostics
- • Strong programming skills in C, C++, Rust, or similar systems languages with experience building reliable software for real hardware
- • Experience with Linux-based hardware platforms, embedded Linux, OpenBMC, Redfish, IPMI, BIOS/UEFI, bootloaders, firmware update systems, kernel drivers, or fleet management software
- • Strong knowledge of hardware/software interfaces including I2C, SMBus, PMBus, SPI, PCIe, Ethernet, USB, UART, GPIO, JTAG, power controllers, and board-level debug tools
- • Demonstrated ability to debug live hardware using logs, packet captures, firmware traces, bus captures, lab hosts, BMC journals, Linux tooling, and controlled experiments
- • Experience with hardware bring-up, manufacturing or qualification testing, system diagnostics, release validation, or deployment of high-performance compute, accelerator, server, networking, storage, or embedded platforms
🏖️ Benefits
- • Relocation assistance available
- • Hybrid work model (3 days/week onsite in San Francisco)
- • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI hardware co-design with research and engineering teams
- • Exposure to end-to-end hardware enablement from bring-up to production deployment
- • Collaboration with cross-functional teams including hardware, firmware, security, manufacturing, and operations
- • Access to advanced tools and infrastructure for validation, telemetry, and system health monitoring
