- • As a Technical Controller at Burkland Associates, you will serve as a strategic financial anchor for high-growth startup clients, ensuring their financial statements are audit-ready, scalable, and investor-compliant while directly supporting founders in scaling their businesses with confidence.
- • Your role combines deep technical accounting expertise with advisory leadership, enabling startups to navigate complex financial reporting, internal controls, and strategic decision-making in fast-paced, remote environments.
- • You will prepare and review monthly and annual GAAP financial statements, including complex footnote disclosures, leveraging your audit manager background to ensure audit readiness and compliance with standards such as ASC 606, ASC 718, and capitalized software accounting.
- • Acting as the internal technical expert, you will draft and implement accounting policies for startups, conduct technical reviews of non-routine accounting positions, and build right-sized internal control frameworks that balance risk mitigation with the speed and agility of early-stage companies.
- • You will define, document, and enforce a quality control framework for client deliverables, including review checklists, sampling methodologies, and documentation standards, while managing issue tracking and remediation efforts to ensure timely resolution.
- • Serving as a technical resource to internal teams, you will provide guidance, training, and support on technical accounting standards, helping client service teams apply appropriate accounting treatments consistently and accurately.
- • In strategic management accounting, you will translate complex financial data into clear narratives for founders, focusing on cash flow, unit economics, and scenario modeling to support data-backed board decisions.
- • You will design real-time tracking systems for key SaaS and e-commerce metrics (CAC, LTV, Churn) using cloud-based tech stacks to streamline the close-to-report cycle and improve financial visibility.
- • As the primary point of contact for founders, you will provide high-level oversight typically expected of a Controller or Audit Manager, leading clients through their first institutional audits and managing relationships with external audit firms to ensure seamless processes.
- • You will collaborate with a remote-first team of over 190 professionals across 800+ clients, contributing to a culture rooted in Burkland’s Core Purpose of Accelerating Dreams and Core Values of Fresh Perspectives, Exponential Value, Empathy, and Trusted Partner.
- • This role offers the opportunity to deepen your expertise in technical accounting for innovative industries while developing advisory, leadership, and systems-thinking skills that drive real impact on startup growth and investor readiness.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with several years as an Audit Manager at a regional or national firm strongly preferred
- • Exceptional command of U.S. GAAP and proven ability to research, document, and apply complex technical accounting positions independently
- • CPA certification preferred due to the role’s emphasis on technical reporting, audit readiness, and compliance
- • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Sage Intacct, along with mastery of Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets (including advanced formulas, pivot tables, and data modeling)
- • Proficiency with Bill.com, Gusto, Rippling, and Expensify for automated AP/AR and payroll processes
- • Comfort navigating a 100% remote tech stack including Slack, Zoom, Google Workspace, and project management tools like Karbon
