📋 Description

• As the Vice President of Software Engineering at PAR Technology, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of our Punchh loyalty product, a critical component of our Unified Customer Experience solutions. This is a leadership role with significant impact, overseeing software engineering operations and fostering a culture of excellence, DevOps principles, and profound ownership. You will work closely with the CTO and other senior leaders to define and execute the overarching strategy, tackling complex projects and initiatives that enhance product quality, optimize product economics, and boost team productivity, all while ensuring we meet our Research & Development financial objectives.
• Your primary responsibility will be to lead and scale a team of approximately 120 software engineers, architects, and quality engineers, primarily distributed across Toronto, Austin, and Jaipur. This involves driving recruitment and onboarding efforts to meet ambitious hiring targets and significantly reduce the time it takes for new employees to become productive. You will be responsible for the organizational design, establishing clear career development ladders, managing the merit process, and overseeing performance management for all team members, ensuring alignment with company-wide international practices.
• A key aspect of this role is owning the Punchh Engineering P&L. This includes collaborating closely with our R&D Operations and Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) teams to develop budgets, forecasts, and reconcile the operating plan. You will need a strong understanding of financial management and the ability to make data-driven decisions to ensure fiscal responsibility and maximize return on investment.
• You will champion a culture of continuous improvement, driving initiatives to enhance both efficiency and quality across all engineering processes. This involves identifying and adopting appropriate industry best practices, particularly those that address existing deficiencies and bottlenecks. You will be expected to lead by example, demonstrating a willingness to be hands-on and go beyond normal responsibilities to ensure the job gets done.
• Effective communication is paramount. You will ensure that communication flows efficiently and effectively between different groups, individuals, and across geographies and time zones. This includes proactively addressing communication deficiencies and resolving conflicts to foster a collaborative and productive environment. You will provide open and honest insights into the state of managed teams and team members to your peers and upper levels of management, ensuring transparency and informed decision-making.
• The Punchh product is a high-growth, high-impact platform generating nearly $100M in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), processing over $25B in sales annually, and sending nearly 15B emails and notifications each year. This role is ideal for someone with a proven aptitude for dealing with and solving challenges at scale and under pressure, who is excited by the opportunity to grow the product another 10x. You will be deeply involved in the technical aspects of the product, which is primarily built using Ruby on Rails and Go, with significant use of Python and TypeScript. The technology stack includes heavy utilization of MySQL, Kafka, Redis, and Kubernetes, with all teams actively leveraging AI to improve productivity.
• You will be responsible for formulating, refining, documenting, and enforcing department standards, policies, and procedures. This includes ensuring that technical designs are consistently produced and vetted to guarantee their appropriateness and robustness. You will also manage projects as needed, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and scope, while dynamically adjusting for any changes or unforeseen circumstances.
• A crucial part of your role will be to acquire and maintain an in-depth understanding of PAR's business, customers, policies, processes, and products, including the technical architecture and technologies behind them. This holistic understanding will enable you to make strategic decisions that align engineering efforts with business goals.
• You will be expected to influence and achieve alignment across a diverse range of opinions and interests, demonstrating strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize multiple perspectives. Comfort in giving and receiving critical feedback, regardless of position, is essential, as is the ability to impartially and aggressively address conflicts and make tough decisions. You should actively seek out, embrace, and evangelize positive change, while concurrently executing both short-term (tactical) and long-term (strategic) plans.
• This role requires superior organizational and time management skills with an affinity for detail. You will be a key leader in driving the identification and adoption of appropriate industry best practices, particularly those that address existing deficiencies. The position is primarily remote, with an expectation of monthly travel or as-needed, and requires willingness to work across different regions and time zones.

🎯 Requirements

• Minimum of ten (10) years of experience leading software engineering projects and teams.
• Minimum of fifteen (15) years of software engineering experience with hands-on technical skills at a senior level.
• Proven ability to effectively manage and lead a multi-location software engineering team.
• Proven record of leveraging agile software engineering principles and practices.
• Demonstrated track record of successfully hiring, managing, coaching, and retaining world-class software engineers.
• Strong aptitude for dealing with and solving challenges at scale and under pressure.
